Magical - though if you want to visit a real ghost-town and have it all to yourself, ask your driver to take you to nearby Douiret.

This was a really cool experience. Our travel leader stopped at this spot that overlooks the city. There is a beautiful small little mosque at the top and within a few hundred feet there is an old abandoned ksar. It is not touristy at all ... so authentic. It was fascinating to see how the Berbers lived in this rough climate. Very interesting stop.

The type of desert you see in the movies is right here at Ksar Ghillane. Two minutes walk from the camp and it's endless sand dunes.

The thermal spring in the oasis is refreshing but warm to swim in. Perhaps inevitably the spring is at the centre of half a dozen shops and cafes so it doesn't exactly feel like you're in the middle of the desert. Since the spring is part of a semi-commercial set up it might be nice if it were cleaned a bit more.

Overall an amazing place to go. Not somewhere you'll ever forget.

I happened to have a life-changing adventure in Douiret in 1979. I got lost on a hike and was rescued by a Berber gentleman on his camel and taken back to Douiret for the night. Met his family, had spicy cous-cous and slept on a cave floor covered by a sheep skin. I wanted to go back to try to find the family, but alas the entire cliff-side cave village is now abandoned. Some of the old-time residents have moved into a new town a half mile away. Quite haunting to peek into the caves - most are still protected by palm wood doors. Like so much else in Tunisia, no apparent government appreciation of the cultural treasures they have - plastic garbage everywhere, doors falling in. Still, worth a visit if you are in the area.
