What travellers are saying
- Trip G2 contributionsA relaxing yet informative tour. It’s a small site, easy to walk with helpful docents. The displays and preservation work keep one firmly situated in mid 19th century rural life yet awed by the focus of Thomas Cole and his followers who forged a new school of art uniquely American.Written 11 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NDeMaio22Durham, UK14 contributionsRarely do I write reviews but felt compelled as our experience with at The Old Game Farm was one of the best I’ve had. This was a family gathering of twelve for a birthday celebration. Many of us had been at the Game Farm as kids so it was very nostalgic and special for us.
Shawn and Sid could not be more accommodating as hosts. Even before we got there, they ensured we had everything we needed upon arrival.
The house is comfortable and decorated tastefully and in line with the history of the property utilizing old signage and fixtures from the days of old. The kitchen was stocked with all the basics and we loved getting fresh eggs every morning from the chickens on site. Shawn took us a great tour of the property, along with his friendly goats.
Overall, a truly unforgettablegetaway with plenty to do on site and in the area. For those who have been there as kids, it will truly transport you back to the past. And for those who haven’t been there, it’s such a unique place, you will love it!Written 16 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I was six years old at the time, and returned several times into my 30s. A few years ago, after a quarter-century hiatus I returned with my own teenage children. Sadly, I must agree with some of the reviewers here who expressed their disappointment over the overgrown trees which now obstruct much of the view from the summit. While a lot can still be seen between the conifers, The limitations which now restrict the vistas are annoying. While the actual summit was covered in trees even when I was a kid, I can still remember seeing at least a 180-degree view of the Catskill High Peaks, with Cornell and Wittenberg Mountains in the foreground and the Ashokan Reservoir as a beautiful centerpiece.
I don't know why the DEC has allowed this condition to evolve. Perhaps it is due merely to budget cuts. But I wonder if it might be because of PC environmentalism gone amok. Whatever the reason(s), I don't think having the forest service take the tops off a few dozen trees would adversely affect the environment. Or, dare I suggest the obvious? Perhaps erecting a modest 40-50 foot observation tower (as existed until the late 1960s) would make the hike more rewarding. It would probably make the Slide Mountain popular once again. I can remember getting the top and meeting a dozen or more folks, taking in the view and sharing the experience. For me, this was as much a part of the experience as the hike itself.
That said, the modest 2.8 mile hike is STILL worth the effort. Even with having to look through gaps between the trees, the view is still magnificent from Burrough's Rock. And Slide Mountain is still one of my favorite places, at least in my native New York State.Written 21 June 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CatskillfamilyCatskill, NY24 contributionsThis is a beautiful riverside park with plenty of space for picnics and enjoying the river view. Nice play area for the kids but it gets very hot on warm days since there is no tree shading near the playground.Written 20 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ImaBluemanOwego, NY260 contributionsBailiwick is a combination of horse farm and rescued animals. While we didn't participate in the horse ride offerings, we saw many children and young adults get to experience being around and riding horses.
The animals at the zoo are rescued animals for various reasons and are provided a safe home. While this is a small zoo, there are very few places that I know of where you will be able to see the animals so close, and for most of them you can buy feed for them.
While I see some comments it is pretty expensive, my wife and I hearts go out to animals that have been rescued and providing support to them is more than worth the cost.
Wonderful visit and I think a good experience for all, especially children.Written 11 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Beautiful trail and woods any season of the year and a great view from just below the summit. Wear sturdy clothes and boots, carry water, and protect yourself from ticks (long pants and sleeves, det, permethrin). - Cac1234Germantown, NY2,085 contributionsBeattie-Powers Place sits high on the west side of the Hudson with lovely views of the river. One may sit and relax on a bench or the picnic table on well maintained grounds. The Rip Van Winkle Bridge and Olana are also visible from the grounds. There is a small but pretty garden near the house and parking area for a few cars. The park is accessible from the far end of Bridge Street/Powers Place.Written 15 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
