- BruinDanFullerton, CA2,883 contributionsFounded in 1904 and considered dead by 1916, Rhyolite is a former gold-mining boomtown whose ruins are now open to the public on land overseen by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). My wife and I visited here on a cold and very windy day during late January 2023.
Rhyolite is located off Highway 394 about 4 mi/6.4 km west of Beatty, Nevada and about 35 mi/56.3 km east of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center in Death Valley National Park. It is about 120 mi/190 km northwest of Las Vegas. From the highway exit, it is a 1.8 mi/2.9 km drive into the center of the ghost town.
The is no admission charge (at least as of this writing); you can simply park along the road and wander around the ghost town, taking in the ruins of the train depot, bank, school and other buildings. There are many interpretive signs that explain how the buildings were used during Rhyolite’s heyday. There is also an intact bottle house that is worth a closer look. NOTE that there is a vault toilet near the train depot; there are no other services in Rhyolite.
Also NOTE that as you drive into Rhyolite, you’ll see a sign for a “free museum.” This is actually for the Goldwell Open Air Museum, which sits on private land and is not part of Rhyolite, which is on BLM (public) land. It is indeed free of charge and is a very thought-provoking stop.
While Rhyolite is not the sort of place you would build a vacation around, it is definitely a worthwhile diversion if you happen to be in the area as it provides an interesting glimpse into the history of the American West.Written 11 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The ghost rider and 12 apostles were particularly interesting and well done, and the isolated setting is eerie. Definitely stop here when visiting Rhyolite - and be on the lookout for packs of burros that traverse this region!Written 27 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - john sHenderson, NV35 contributionsThis small but well maintained museum reflecting the history of the mining era and Beatty itself. There is a good array of books, photo's and other artifacts that makes it worth a visit.Written 8 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim TKenai, AK904 contributionsThe sign next to the highway and the wreckage of a plane crash are all that is to be seen. There’s a gate across the road so you really can’t even get to the crashed plane. But it’s an interesting piece of history of the area to learn about.Written 16 November 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Steve SEugene, OR1,233 contributionsIt is a pretty old and relatively unkept cemetery. It definitely shows it’s age. Worth a look, none the less.Written 2 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ImissthesunMarathon, FL168 contributionsWe chose this place after looking at numerous reviews for different places outside the park. We stayed in room 104 it had been recently remodeled - very comfortable bed - nice bathroom! You are close to the casino but you hear nothing and no smoke smell in the room. We did sit in the hot tub to relax after walking in the park all day - could of been a little warmer once the sun went down. There was a stray burro wondering the parking lot that was super cute. I would stay here again and recommend it for travelers wanting a place to stay close to Death Valley without spending a fortune!Written 22 September 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kimberly N628 contributionsThis is a great place to make a road trip stop between Reno and Las Vegas. Although on the pricey side, they have just about every type of candy available with an emphasis on those that remind me of days of long ago. When my mother was alive, I would pick up some Swedish Fish (which reminded me of her) and a package of large snow caps (nonpareils, which were her father's favorite) to bring to her. On a recent roadtrip, we stopped here again. This time I was in search of pecan log rolls because they could not be found anywhere else on our gas stops. I remembered my mother picking them up on long road trips when I was little but I think they are just a Stuckey's thing. So I asked an older man behind the counter if they even had them here. He told me exactly where to look. There were two pecan log rolls in a bag so I took them back to the man to purchase them. He clearly approved of my choice! He told me to keep them in the refrigerator and take one out for a slice when I wanted some. While the pecan log from here is not the same as the Stuckey's one, which has a nougat center, the one I ended up with is still delicious with a rich caramel center. It reminds me of having a slice of pecan pie, which happened to be my mom's favorite.Written 30 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - KCFRoseville, CA6 contributionsIf you want the best sage honey on the planet, stop at Miguel's. Awesome. Never granulates no matter how long you have it. I highly recommend Sage Honey for all. Their customer service is awesome, too. Thanks, Miguel's!!
