- Neil MAshford, UK674 contributionsWe have visited the area many times having relatives close by. Each year we make a pilgrimage to at least one of the major cognac houses.
Courvoisier is one of the big ones and clearly have plenty on money. The tour and tasting is paid for and depending on your choice there are different price points. Is this value for money..? Questionable although it is very interesting.
Highlights of the visit for us were Napolean's hat, the cross section of geology under the vine and of course the tasting.
There is no doubt that cognac making is an art form. But what courvoisier gives you a sense of is how much value is created not in the product but in the marketing.
I would recommend the visit, but would also advise any cognac enthusiasts to absolutely visit one of the many smaller producers in the area. Just stop at any of the roadside signs and knock on the door. And you will realise what i am trying to articulate above. You'll be warmly welcomed and won't be charged to taste.
When in Jarnac this has to be done.

Its entrance belies its internal dimensions which has soaring vaulted roofs and fluted columns. The crypt is worth the visit but the sense of space, the acoustics make this a little gem of calm and thoughtfulness....Written 2 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Stephanie K1 contributionReally great tour with Lucie!! Such an interesting distillery and history and Lucie was knowledgeable and informative - with really great English - both ahead of the visit and during the tour itself!

Having flown in to Bordeaux, we spent a couple of nights there first getting acquainted with this fine historic city. We then took the train to Angouleme where we arrived on a Sunday afternoon to find that city buzzing with the last day of a superb classic car show spread through the streets with even a race circuit in one area within the ancient walls. We couldn’t have wished for better entertainment plus plenty of choice of restaurants.
We had managed with some difficulty in the UK to book a taxi to and from Jarnac as none of the local taxis was available. However, Le Boat personnel were very helpful and directed us to taxis in Angouleme. Some help from a French speaking neighbour got us over the line but I feel sure Le Boat (Amelie or Romaud) would have come to the rescue if necessary. Our driver, William (+33 6 22 12 18 78), charged 70 euros each way for our party of 4 plus all of our luggage and was very prompt as well as informative (in French) about the local area.
We arrived early enough at the base in Jarnac to leave our suitcases and find lunch in the main square close by and do some shopping. There is an Intermarche supermarket quite a walk from the base and we got initial supplies there. Fortunately Romaud from Le Boat happened to call in there at lunchtime and offered to put our shopping in his car to save us carrying it back. We discovered later that the Coop is much nearer and would have been more than adequate for our needs initially although not open on a Monday (typical in France!) However, as expected, we found plenty of food shops at the bigger towns and villages along our cruise.
We stayed overnight at the base and had an enjoyable meal at Le Coin Charente that evening then cruised to Saintes via Cognac and Le Chaniers over a couple of days. A meal at Le Moulin de La Baine at Le Chaniers was so good that we planned to go again on our return trip but sadly it was closed on our second visit. After exploring Saintes we booked tickets for the train to Rochefort on Friday. Yet another beautiful sunny day made it hard not to love this historic naval port and it’s modern day attractions around the marina and port.
We continued our cruise on Saturday to Porte D’Envaux. Meantime, another Le Boat crew warned us that we couldn’t get as far as St Savinien as there was a boom across the river. We had a pleasant walk to the quarry at Les Lapidiales to see the rock sculptures there. Every day on this cruise has brought something quite different and unexpected and fun. Another excellent meal at a local hostelry – there is definitely a culinary theme to cruising this area!
With the forecast ahead looking less good, we decided to make our way back to Saintes where there was still more to explore, especially the Roman amphitheatre, and also planned another train trip, this time to La Rochelle. Saintes is an excellent railway centre and there were more options available than time. It turned out to be a good choice as heavy rain arrived late afternoon by which time we had explored enough of this bigger town and port so decided to finish with the Aquadrome sealife centre which was excellent. Back to the train and the boat without getting too wet......
We retraced our steps via Cognac where, having already got acquainted with the town, we opted for an interesting/entertaining tour and tasting at Hennessy while the heavens opened outside. Then back to Jarnac and the finale for our cruise - a meal on the last night at Michelin starred La Verre y Table which is within walk distance from the base.Written 13 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We took the train from Cognac to Jarnac (4€) and walked the short stretch (10 minutes) into the center of Jarnac.
Just to the west of town this very original and genuine Cognac house is located. Delamain demonstrates real Cognac manufacturing as it was (and apparently still is)
Rebecca gave us a wonderful tour ending with tasting of fabulous cognacs.
Our favorite cognac all categories.
