Every time my husband and I visit my inlaws in Portland, Maine we go to Crescent Beach State Park.

You have easy parking - free for 1 hour at the beach or park at the lot for the day for reasonable rates.
So make sure you know when high tide is, otherwise go to Crescent beach state park in Cape Elizabeth- a 5 minute drive away.

You can walk the shore, enjoy, the docks, take a schooner cruise, hope the islands on a ferry or simply enjoy a picnic at the public park.
We drove to a few of the parks along the bay to see some of the lighthouses and then the following day took a boat ride tour.

We visited the park at the end of a busy day, and the walk along the shoreline is so very peaceful with a beautiful bonus of this adorable lighthouse.
A gentle paved walk around the park is worth while with many excellent views of Portland Harbor and a different perspective of the City of Portland.

I was happy to see a large parking lot but I had to pay to park.
I didn't park here, so I don't know for a fact, but it appeared they were looking at the time on your restaruant receipt and charging you for parking for hours after than time.
