I always wanted to see the Everglades, but didn't want to get the quick and crowded "tourist tour", so I booked the Cyprus slough walk. At first I was a bit hesitant because I couldn't imagine walking around in knee deep mud with my boots and pants on (in the colder climates I come from, you usually avoid doing that). Looking back now it was the greatest experience of this vacation so far. Dan explained not only how to avert a confrontation with an alligator, but also the dynamics of this huge ecosystem and all the plants, snails, fish and birds we saw. I quickly felt more like on a biological expedition than on a guided tour. It was awesome! Walking in the mud wasn't so bad after all. The water is quite warm. You sink about ankle deep into mud but there's a foot of water over that. So yes, your shoes and pants will need to go to the laundry afterwards, but we were still able to drive home wearing these clothes without messing up the car seats too much. Make sure to wear some good hiking boots as the mud is very mucky and you don't want to lose your shoes in there. :)
