What travellers are saying
- Andrea S7 contributionsWe had an absolutely amazing time on our 15 day safari with Makasa Safaris. We chose them based on recommendations from Lonely Planet and many other travellers, and we had a wonderful 2 weeks of experiences. With our 3 kids (ages 10-15) we explored different parks and saw an amazing array of animals, and also got to meet many of the local people - we chose the “Safari and Meeting with the Tanzanian Tribes” tour option and we HIGHLY recommend it for a wonderful blend of wildlife and culture, honouring the indigenous peoples of Tanzania.
Makasa was a professional company to deal with and we had prompt and thorough information available to us regularly throughout the research, booking, and travelling processes. The jeep was clean and well-cared for, and the lodges were wonderful, with kind and friendly staff, great food, and beautiful surroundings in each of the different parks.
The best part of our safari was our guide, Humphrey Joseph. He was incredible: post-secondary training in mammals, birds and amphibians, years of experience in the industry, and a passion for animals. He was a wealth of information which was so great for us and for our kids - we learned so much! More than just finding animals (how did he do it so well?!) he would tell us so much about them. He clearly loves his job and loves animals, and his humour, energy, patience, kindness, creativity and thoughtfulness really made this a trip of a lifetime for us. We are so thankful!
We cannot say enough good things. This was a big ticket item for us - we had been saving for years, but it was worth every penny. We would love to come back to Tanzania and do another safari with Makasa and Humphrey. 100% amazing!!Written 14 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. As of 11am, it is likely that it will be highly crowded.
My team and I got there early, and it was amazing.
Everyone got several rounds with the swing.
Everyone got to swim to their satisfaction before it got crowded.
Floater fee: 5,000 TZSH
Water goggles fee: 10,000 TZSH
Lunch 10,000 to 15,000 TZSH.
Menu: Roasted beef, roasted mutton, chips, Ugali, greens, eggs...etc
Be patient because we ordered at 10 am, and the order was still delayed after it got crowded.Written 4 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. When we first reached out, Sophie was quick to respond and provided the most detailed information. Between her help and all of the resources available on their website, we had very few questions. By the time we arrived in Tanzania, we felt fully prepared for what was to come each day.
We started with a 3-day safari with Cathbert, he was phenomenal!! He is so knowledgeable and passionate, and his love for nature and teaching others is a true blessing.
We then did the 7-day Machame Route and we couldn't have asked for a better group of guides (Albert, Regis, Israel, Starson, Mark, and Gaudiance). They made sure each and every one of us made it to the summit, while keeping a positive and upbeat energy throughout our climb. We arrived to camp each day with everything set up and the most delicious food waiting for us. We even had a Christmas dinner and celebration the night of summit. The porters and team went above and beyond!!
We rented some of our gear and everything was clean and in great shape. We really appreciated the gear check with Doris the night before we left, super helpful and comforting knowing we had what we needed. Thanks to the entire Altezza team for making our dream trip come true! I would 100% book with Altezza again!Written 8 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Working with them to organize the trip was very satisfactory - responsive and helpful. Medium price on the climb and safari - absolutely great value. Guides on Kili were professional and friendly - although we are 67 and 70 year old guys, they quickly determined we could handle the vigor and would enjoy pushing ourselves a bit. That being said, they made it very clear that if we needed a break or go even more "pole pole", that would be great.
Food on the mountain was very good. After talking with many other climbers on the mountain, most of us lost our appetite somewhere between day 4 (3?) and day 6 due to altitude symptoms. Abdi, our chef could have presented a Michelin 3 Star meal and yet we would have likely just picked at our plates by day 5. Nonetheless, everyone was gracious and supportive and understanding.
The mountain climb was much more challenging than we expected but our 2 guides and team encouraged us constantly and made us feel like heroes.
After coming down from the mountain, we went on our 4 day safari. Guide was knowledgeable and through wisdom, luck, and collegial chatting with other guides, he led us to well over 35 lions and 10 cheetahs, not to mention all other African mammals we wanted to see. The elusive leopard didn't show - but this is my 6th trip to Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia) and it seems I will just have to let that sighting go. Accommodations on the safari were fabulous. The tent camp was a clear favorite with sink, toilet, shower and two very comfortable beds in Ndutu. Exquisite cuisine at every stop - again, even though we paid what I thought was a very medium budget price.
Monkey Adventures does not have a lot of social media presence (like Youtube etc) but don't be dissuaded by that. They deserve serious consideration. I would rehire them immediately - and just might. Maybe 6 trips to Africa is still not enough.Written 10 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Did not reach all the way to Uhuro because of dizziness just before Stella point. - travel-adventure42Kalispell, MT129 contributionsAfrican Scenic Safaris did such an incredible job with our 8-day safari. It all started with working with Nembris, who worked out a trip I would never have even thought of. With her local knowledge she was able to direct us to the best places to view wildlife for the time of year we were going. Nembris was incredibly well organized and took care of all the details of the trip.
Our guide, Emmanuel, was simply brilliant. He was an excellent, safe driver, and was incredibly knowledgeable about the wildlife and birds. He was a great person to have on the trip, very personable and helpful and he knew lots of great out-of-the-way places for wildlife viewing. HIs friendly manner made each day enjoyable.
The accommodations Nembris booked were the best of each “class” of lodging we chose. From tent camping in the campground at Tarangire National Park to the luxury tent camp in central Serengeti to the lodge overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater, each place lent itself to a varied and special experience. We especially loved the tent camping as we got to see lots of wildlife up close as they passed near the camping area. And even in the campground the food was specially catered by an excellent chef.
I would highly recommend African Scenic Safaris as a well organized, custom safari company with an excellent focus on conservation and ethics. They greatly exceeded our wildest expectations and they gave us a trip of a lifetime.Written 10 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We relied on the Kilimanjaro Heroes Adventures agency, we were looking for a local agency and we are absolutely satisfied with this choice. Local agencies need support to be able to grow and compete with larger, international ones, keep this in mind! Local is better!
We had booked the Lemosho route in 7 days, our fabulous guides were Nyoka and Prospere: prepared, competent, professional and very helpful guys. They were able to advise us impeccably. They saw that we could gain a day and climb to the summit earlier, skipping the night at Karanga camp. We regrouped without problems thanks to the support of the whole group. One day less also means not accumulating tiredness and cold at night. They also knew how to identify the departure time for the summit for our pace, so as to arrive at the top for the sunrise, to enjoy a truly unique and special spectacle, optimizing the rest before the climb.
I would add that we had chosen to join a group to save a little and share the experience. However, the agency is not always able to form groups by putting together departure dates, chosen routes and days available. So we did the trek alone (we are a couple), but you are never alone, because the crew is always large. However, the agency did not make any changes to the price.
We always ate very well, abundant and varied dishes every day. I underline that we are a bit complicated, I am a vegetarian and my partner cannot eat gluten and lactose. For the cook (chef Ali) this was not a problem at all, he was able to offer us tasty dishes every day, prepared with care. Before each meal we had delicious fruit available.
With the rest of the group there has always been a very pleasant and fun atmosphere. They were all helpful, kind, welcoming and very nice!
Overall, everything was perfect!
After Kilimanjaro we went on a two-day safari and visited Ngorongoro and Tarangire with another specialized guide, Jamal. Everything was excellent here too! Jamal was able to tell us a lot about the parks, the fauna and introduced us up close to the animals we wanted to see so much. Passing by Lake Manyara, my partner said it would be nice to try the fish from the lake. Jamal stopped by the fishermen to catch the fish and the cook cooked it expertly for the dinner. What else?
Even the structures in which we stayed, on which the agency relies, are excellent: beautiful locations, functional, clean, with the possibility of a bar/restaurant etc.
The guides and agency staff were also available to support us in our other requests and needs (accompanying us to purchase a bus ticket to continue our journey to Dar es Salaam, accompanying us to the bus, arranging breakfast in advance of at the usual time to allow us to leave etc.).
Thank you, thank you so much Heroes!
Keep going, value your work and your country!Written 2 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The whole experience was one of the most amazing adventures we have ever been on. The route is beautiful, with views of Kilimanjaro the whole way, coming closer and closer with each day. But the best part were the people who made everything possible.
Gladys team - Adam, Fadhili, John, Samuel (Mama), Athman...everyone - made the whole expedition so much more special then we could have predicted - smiling, singing, making sure we are well-rested, feeling good, drinking enough, all the way to the top and back. With them taking care of us - 3 cooked meals a day, snacks along the day hikes, making sure to find a good spot to put up tents for the night and daily medical checks..and just all around good vibes, there was no doubt we would make it to the top.
You can tell, they love the mountain and their job deeply.
By the end of the 8 days, we really felt like we gained a family and we couldn't be more grateful.Written 9 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We chose them based on reviews from other travelers, and the sage advice that Edward gave others (on the TA forum) planning their own trips. We were also interested in working with a tour company that was based in Tanzania. They answered all our questions, and put together an absolutely memorable trip. They teamed us up with Laurent, our guide and driver for the safari. Laurent is a young and energetic gentleman who has an incredible sense of the best places to look for wildlife in the various parks we visited. He is also interested in photography and was always helpful and patient in allowing us the time and vantage points to "get the shot." They arranged a bunch of extra activities including a hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti, a couple of walking safari outings, and a visit to a Masai community. They coordinated our Rwanda "add-on" trip to see the gorillas with another highly competent tour company, Mist Rwanda Safaris, who we have reviewed separately. After we returned, I had a phone conversation with Kim and Edward, who were interested in all aspects of our experience, including any information that might make other clients' trip that much better. If you're planning a trip to East Africa, look no further than Pristine Trails!Written 9 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Safari591358844101 contributionWe summitted Kilimanjaro in early February 2025 with Ascend Tanzania via the 6-days Machame route and I recommend them 100% ! The two guides were super nice, careful and knew exactly what they were doing, we always felt safe. The other crew members were also very nice to us with a lot of kind gesture and I must admit the cook was really talented and surpassed my expectations after each day on the mountain !Written 10 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ZajaczekNewport -Trefdraeth, UK95 contributionsWe booked two adventures with Habari but Safari deserves a separate review. We booked a three day camping safari (Park Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara).
We have been picked up by our guide/driver Hillary from our hotel. We had a Safari jeep all to ourselves which was a very nice surprise.
Hillary was very professional and knowledgeable. Spending three days in his company was truly a great pleasure. Our priority was to see a lion being on the safari before (different park with different company) we have been unlucky to see any.
Hillary delivered beyond the expectations. Not only we saw lions but all big five :-)
We couldn't have been more happy.
For three nights we stayed in the Heaven nature campsite. The campsite is basic but has everything you need. Izrael was making sure we were happy and looked after. Delicious food and a very friendly atmosphere.
As always Habari delivered a perfectly organised adventure. We didn't manage to go to Serengeti so we will be booking that with Habari again and hopefully we will have more laughs with Hillary.Written 3 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I felt safe the entire journey and very cared for.
It felt like each member of our team was personally dedicated to seeing my husband, our two friends and myself summit. That was a very motivating and encouraging experience. They also were professional and wonderfully helpful throughout the journey. The whole team was fun to be around and we enjoyed getting to know each of them.
We did the 7-day Lemosho Route and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We had well-maintained tents for sleeping each night; a private mess tent, complete with chairs and a table; three freshly prepared, hot meals per day; and a private, portable toilet! There was ample, clean drinking water and the team worked hard to ensure we were healthy the entire time (watching for signs of altitude sickness, etc.)
Ending our trip with a safari was spectacular -- due in large part to our guide and driver, Chris. He was so friendly, professional and dedicated to ensuring we saw the Big 5 and all of the big cats. He is experienced with leading safaris; he was well-versed in knowledge of the parks and the animals and answered all of our questions. He listened to our desires, didn't rush us and was really fun to be around!
It's evident that TCE takes great personal pride in their work. From the camping equipment that kept us dry, to the nice touches of warm, freshly-made food for every meal on the mountain and lunches on safari, to the team's warm welcomes and attentiveness to our feedback -- Top Climbers Expeditions is a fantastic company. I cannot recommend them enough!Written 14 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Kilimanjaro to raise funds to feed children in Kenya who attend the Biafra school. Peak Planet is a great company. Ben Smith is so helpful. He is kind and patient, answering all our questions. Our leads, Msuri and Khatifa, are knowledgeable, patient, and safely got us to the summit! If I ever climb again, I will want them to lead me.
The other members were kind, attentive, and very capable: Hassan Soya (cook), Humphrey Urio (waiter & Summit), Charles Majele (tent master), Maick Nanyaro (toilet master & Summit), Mwalimu Seisere (porter), Paschal Michael (porter), Alphayo Mollel (porter), Stephano Msaki (porter), Jimmy Mgaya (porter), Hortencia Shayo (porter), Isaya Urasa (porter), Elidaima Shawa (porter), and Hassan Saimon (porter). On several occasions, many of the porters came to meet us to help carry our bags at the end of a very long day of walking. Day 2 was very hard, almost impossible. Our guides encouraged us through it. Summit night was nearly impossible. Our guides ensured we made it to the Summit!!!
Thank you. I will refer people to this company, as long as, Peak Planet continues to take care of its employees and provides excellent service.Written 1 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The lodging was wonderful, the food was great. We had never been to Africa before and would go back again! We felt well cared for, safe, and I'm so glad we went with Popote. Cynthia and Saed met us at the airport and we had contact all through our trip, even helping us in Zanzibar with questions after our safari was completed. I highly recommended Popote!Written 2 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Matt M10 contributionsWe did a lot of research on guide groups to lead us up the Mt Kilimanjaro climb and settled on Ultimate Kilimanjaro based on their top ratings for safety, experience and overall service. We were THRILLED with our 9 day northern route experience. Our U.S. point person (Shawn) as awesome in helping us plan our trip. All of his advice was excellent. Our lead guide (Anuck) and other guides (Nesto and Nico) were absolutely outstanding. Our team of porters are the unsung heroes of this type of climb. Their experience in helping us acclimate and prepare our minds to achieve the summit was amazing.
Our group of 5 all had experience in endurance events but this effort was totally different. The challenge of oxygen deprivation above 16,000 ft is real. Our guides prepared us well mentally and we all made the summit, even in adverse weather conditions like an unexpected white out blizzard!
Strongly recommend Ultimate Kilimanjaro if you want to climb the mountain successfully. Their services, food and tent quality were outstanding.Written 6 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
