If you want to take a wonderful day trip out of Bariloche then what a better way to explore the surrounding areas than taking the magnificent 7 Lakes Road connecting the city of Bariloche in the Rio Negro Province with San Martin de los Andes in Neuquén province.
You'll go pass the 7 lakes, reason why this portion of Route 40, the equivalent of Route 66 in the U.S. is named after.
There are several view points and picturesque towns resembling the Bavaria Region of Germany.
It is a Road to be taken with time, no rush here!
Views are indeed amazing, it will take you a good 4 hours to reach San Martin de Los Andes stopping a long the way to enjoy the beautiful views.

I took this trip back in January 20191

This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places that I have seen in my life. The air is so pure, the water of lake Lacar is so magic, almost dreamed. I had the opportunity to swim here, and even tough water is very cold, it was fantastic!
Winter is a great season to visit this place, the temperature is between fresh and warm, all the roses in the city are flowered.
I think that one of the most exciting and tiring things you can do here, is walk from the city to "Playa bonita". You can be almost an hour walking until you arrive, but the view there is fantastic.
I'm sure I'm coming back whenever I can!

We went there twice. First time it was closed because of wind (that is what they told us in the tourist office at Villa la Angostura). Hence, we recommend first before climbing up the gravel road to the starting point of the lift. The ride is definately not cheap. But, good Investment if you want to have the 180 degrees view over the lakes. Up there, the Restaurant is open. It is recommended to take warm clothes even in summer and walking boots as climbing up the ski areas requires good shoe equipment

We had a good time on the walk other reviewers have described well. We saw the road access to the mirador and don’t recommend that route. It’s extremely sandy and dusty.

Recommended to everyone, who enjoys hiking. There are many trails with different levels of difficulties and duration. Plan at least half a day to visit the park, but multiple day stay is worthwhile nontheless. Unfortunately, aIgadn’t enough time to do a long hike, instead I did the ‘Cascada El Saltillo’ trail, which leads to a lovely waterfall at the end. Other activities such as boat trips, kayaking or swimming can be done too..
Roads are unpaved and varies in their condition (incl. some very bumpy sections). I was fine with an non-4x4 small car, but I imagine it becomes a difficult to impossible task, when roads are wet.
Park entry was 350 arg. Pesos p.p. (see photo of price list)
Opening hours of the park office: 8am to 8:00pm

As we had some time on our hands and wanted to get ‘off the beaten track’ we set off along the 25 km of unpaved road to Villa Traful. The road was not too bad although it was pitted in places. Imagine our surprise when we arrived to find a modern bustling lakeside resort with metalled roads, restaurants, hotels, etc. Amazing to think that everything had come along that gravel road.
