Horseback Riding Tours
We are located on a 2000 hectare Bushveld property, owned by the Sandford community trust. Horse Whispers is a company that offers a wide variety of horse trails. The well-being and future of these horses is dependent on the income from horse trails and donations. Most of these horses came from foster homes and were field horses fairly familiar to human interaction, some did not trust humans at all and others had no understanding of personal space. The training of these horses consisted of halter work, trusting and respecting humans, desensitization exercises, groundwork, preparing for a rider, backing and riding away with a safe, confident horse! Today, these horses able to play a significant role in brighting the lives of underprivileged children. The program teach more than just riding; children develop life skills such as self-confidence, responsibility and discipline – and can have a positive impact on academic performance too. Join us for an unforgettable horse riding experience through the Hazyview bushveld with an en-route stop to meet 6 majestic African Elephants.Or go on a breathtaking ride alongside the river and through the hills leads to an idyllic picnic site in a secluded valley. Enjoy your lunch in the shaded canopy provided by the indigenous Matumi trees. Participate in a cattle drive which is a cattle round up on the Sandford Reserve, where a small number of cattle are located and gathered and moved to the nearest water source. The cattle are moved at a walk, any faster than a walk and you run the fat off them, most unwelcomed by any farmer. There is some faster work occasionally to retrieve runaways. We also offer 30 min, one hour and two hour bush outrides.

We choose the simple program. The experience was relatively short but there was a lot packed into the 1 hour timeframe. It was informative and interactive, and I felt really good about the way the animals are treated. The up close and personal parts of the experience were pretty magical and the staff was extremely helpful; taking photos and videos with people's phones so the guests could fully enjoy the interactions, and engaging the kids with safe opportunities to interact.

Don't miss this up-close encounter with elephants. They are so intelligent. We visited twice. The head keeper said Tambo showed that he recognized us by our scent on the second visit. They know the names of their keepers and can execute 90+ commands! They are rescued elephants living in a huge sanctuary and cared for by skilled keepers.

Like all Kruger Park gates Phabeni Gate can be very busy early in the mornings of peak dates (weekends and public/school holidays. Our experience is that the staff are always cheerful and helpful--we carry Wild Cards which simplify the entry processes by not involving cash transactions. On many occasions we have encountered our first animals within a few kilometres of the gate but do remember that you are visiting their home so the animals be visible when they, and you, are in the same place--they are not there at your commend.

This was one of three cultural villages we visited. Each was very different, and interesting in its own way. We were able to speak (through an interpreter) with the chief and the Sangoma. As we were the only ones there, we could ask quite a few questions, and were able to clear up some misconceptions we had heard. The Sangoma showed us her medicines, and most of them actually have crossover into Western medicine. She also clearly indicated that people who are ill beyond her expertise are sent to the hospital. We learned a lot.

Thank you Marina for a fabulous two hour ride. To the rest of the world my wife and I stopped riding over ten years ago but used to ride regularly. We started again gently early last year. We are now both in our seventies. Marina took us at our pace on two lovely horses. Great to ride a horse that yields to the leg again after English school horses. The farm she rides on has varied terrain to suit all standards of riding. We are definitely going again if she will have us.

Mike was the Safari Guide.. wonderful, very experienced and extremely knowledgable.. he took time for people to take photos, explained the whys of everything. We saw Hippos in the water, many giraffe, alot of kudo and antelope, Elephants, many different animals. Early morning Safari is probably better than Sunset, but the sunset there is amazing. Recommended to take this Safari..
