The tour was an amazing introduction into the recent history of social, economic and political upheaval in South Africa. From Constitution Hill, site of a former prison and current seat of the Constitutional Court; to the Apartheid Museum, documenting the history of national separatism, to a drive-through tour of Soweto, the focal point of anti-apartheid protest, including a visit to the 1976 Hector Pieterson shooting site, where protest began and a visit to Nelson Mandela's home in Soweto.
In part self-guided, in part docent-led, during the drive and at or stops, our tour guide Clement pointed out sites of historical significance and provided color (with brutal honesty) on local and national issues. He and his partner Nathi, our tour van driver, contributed greatly to our day. To complete the day, we enjoyed a buffet dinner of local food at a Soweto restaurant.
Solly, the tour operator, was polite and responsive to questions. Pickup and dropoff were at local hotels. In all, it was great experience for a first-time visitor; I highly recommend this tour.
