Beautiful church with a separate chapel where the burial and the relics of St. Thomas are kept. Peaceful place for contemplation. This is a must destination when visiting Chennai!

Entrance from typically hot, busy & chaotic Chennai street. Into a cool & quiet oasis set back in time. Enjoyed the serenity and sense of history.

This is a large white edifice that houses the remains of St Thomas. Inside is interesting, the wooden roof, stained glass windows, the painted stations of the cross and a statue of Christ with peacocks at his feet (Shiva?).
Downstairs is the tomb of St Thomas but as there was a service on, we didn’t get a great view of it. Definitely worth a visit. On the wall are religious posters and in one, I am sure Jesus was modelled on Elvis!

St. Mary's Church is located within the grounds of Fort St George. The church is the oldest the oldest British building in India. It's plain inside but ozzes history.

This church has a very tall building, which is visible from a distance too. This church is at a walking distance from Egmore Railway Station. The area of this church is quite big. The environment is very soothing here.

Also known as San Thome Cathedral, one of India's best-known sites containing the Sacred Heart Shrine and a relic bone of St. Thomas, the apostle who arrived on the shores of India in the 1st century AD. A wedding was taking place and the church was full of happy families and flowers; the hymns could be heard in the churchyard, making this a lovely living church. The relic bone of St. Thomas is in a separate underground crypt where several people were quietly praying. A nice place to visit, non-commercial but with a little tea shop for those in need. No entrance fee.

The new church, located adjacent to the existing one in Besant Nagar, is a beautiful church with exquisite Gothic architecture. One needs to climb quite a few steps to enter the church. There is sufficient parking within the premises. We did not find much crowd at the time of our visit. Definitely worth visiting

A divine presence could be felt in this campus. A hidden historical place more important than the St. George Fort, and a long big tradition lives here. I dont know how many of the parishioners from present congregation knows the history and tradition. The cemetery in the campus shows the poor administration by the diocese . A must visit in Chennai.

“Luz” is a Portuguese word which means light. This spot was like a forest and even to this day, this church is also known as “kaatukoil” where in Tamil language, it translates to “forest church”.
The existing structure at Luz church was built by the Portuguese in 1516. The architecture consists of patterns of gothic arches, Baroque ornamentation compounded with classic European style. The altars are gilded with silver and gold leaves and the ceilings with powder blue Fresco paintings. The foundation stone of this church is considered to be ‘one of the oldest European monuments in India.’
This ancient church was raised to the status of a Shrine on 15th August, 2010 and also to the status of a Heritage Monumental Shrine in the city of Chennai. This Heritage status is accorded by the Department of Metropolitan Development Authority as Heritage Building in Tamil Nadu.
