What travellers are saying
- Don8 contributionsWe were delighted at how welcoming Sundari was to us when we entered her beautiful home. Sundari started our lesson by saying, in her culture, visitors are treated like gods – and she meant it! As we cooked, we enjoyed talking about our respective lives overseas, the places we had lived in and the cultural differences between customs and eating habits, especially in India. She was a wealth of knowledge and extremely generous.
Regarding preparation of the dishes, she impressed us both with her detailed descriptions of ingredients and how to select/use them. Sundari was incredibly well prepared with ingredients carefully measured for our Western sensibilities. 😊 The meal we prepared in her amazing, spacious kitchen was fit for a king, and we will always remember it.
Sundari also guided us on a short walk to her local shops where she went out of her way to help us purchase a range of items, not just for the kitchen. Her interaction with the local shopkeepers showed that she knew them well, and we are now members of her long list of fans! We look forward to the day when we can return to Chennai and enjoy her lessons again. Thank you, Sundari!Written 17 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's an unforgettable traveling experience and opportunity to connect with an amazing person. From the food, to the cooking expertise, and hospitality it's well worth every penny.
- The Food
The food was phenomenal, flat out. Sundari's Dosas made me weep for the childhood I never had eating them fresh from her panðŸ˜. She taught me how to make Veggie Biryani, pepper rasam soup, Spiced and stir fried Okra (Bendi), veggie dahl, Dosa (including a 2nd type of thick dosa topped with onion and herb), and Masala Chai. She prepared Yogurt raita and Rotis for us beforehand.
- The Cooking Experience
Sundari is a knowledgeable, well-prepared, and passionate cooking teacher. She has been cooking for many years and can answer all your questions on technique and ingredient usage. She loves food and enjoys talking about cuisine outside of India as well. She has family in the USA and can advise on ingredient availability there.
She really cares about curating your experience and was happy to help me customize the menu. The class was a pleasant balance of observing and listening vs active participation. Sundari was happy to let me jump in and out of the cooking work as I wanted. Sundari's kitchen was beautiful and well-stocked. Super organized and professional about everything. Afterwards, she sent me the recipes.
- The Hospitality
It was an honor and pleasure to be a guest of Sundari and her Husband Krishna in their beautiful home. From the second I walked in, I felt comfortable and welcomed. She even created a Ragnoli welcome design on her floor with powder - beautiful. Sundari is easy to talk to and I truly enjoyed spending 6 or so hours with her. After dinner, she went out of her way to show me not only the local grocery market, but her local temple and Kulfi shop. She was happy to take me anywhere I wanted to go in the neighborhood and even helped me with local travel stuff - directions, food recs, getting a local sim card on my phone.
Bottom line, this was a lovely experience I'll remember forever. Sundari sets the standard for being an incredible host and cooking teacher. I'd go back tomorrow if I could!Written 24 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This food experience was just brilliant - I felt like we were visiting an auntie’s house or something, we were made to feel so welcome! Shani’s apartment is pretty, clean, and homely. We had a lovely chat with Shani and her friend over sweet lassi and some tasty home made snacks to start with.
We helped Shani to cook a chicken curry and paneer curry, and she talked us through the ingredients and process as we cooked down chopped onions. After about 30 mins of the main cooking, we took a break whilst Shani finished off the food.
We got chatting to Shani’s lodgers (two very friendly young women, ask Shivani to sing for you too!!) and recieved lots of local advice. Very handy if it’s your first time in Chennai - unfortunately we are leaving tomorrow so can’t make much use of it!
We also learned how to cook a deep-fried bread which I can’t remember the name of, but is very delicious. Our chicken curry was my favourite, but Shani also served dahl, chickpea curry and some rice.
Finally, a cup of tea and sweet, cold and delicious rice pudding for dessert.
We had such a lovely afternoon and have left with seriously full bellies, and a box of masala for the road! I recommend this for people who are more interested in the eating and social experience rather than the cooking, or for people who are new to Indian cooking. Shani is extremely knowledgable and makes no-fuss, tasty Indian food that should be easy to replicate at home. She has - unsurprisingly - won local cooking contests with the quality of her food! Shani has also offered to send us the recipes (which I will definitely take her up on!).
In short, it’s worth every penny and you will be very well looked after!
Also, the staff at Authenticook (company that organises the day) were very helpful and accomodating when we had to rearrange due to illness. - Sherm67Riverview, FL56 contributionsVery awesome cooking experience as part of our Chennai tour. Vahitha runs a cooking school and had us in her kitchen for several hours teaching us how to cook various South Indian dishes like Idli, Sambar, Chettinad chicken, fish, roti.
Vahitha is very pleasant and made the hands on experience a lot of fun for us, while educating us about various Indian spices, even highlighting best ways to prepare the spices before using them. She is also very considerate and will adjust the amount of spices based on how much you can tolerate.
The dishes we prepared and cooked with her were very delicious. We sat around her dining table and thoroughly enjoyed our delicious creations!
The entire experience lasted about 4 hours and I would definitely recommend a session with Vahitha if you are visiting Chennai.Written 7 March 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
