Wow! Amazing hospitality, We learned recipes and got to do hands-on supervised cooking on three dishes. And, we could elect the level of chile we cooked with, from USA our tourist heat tolerance is milder than South India's love of chile. The many other spices layered under the heat are wonderful.

On arrival, our host took us on a car tour of a local shrine, the beach front, and a bustling outside vegetable market identifying unfamiliar fruits, vegetables, spices, and lentils.

Back home, we were greeted by a friendly yellow lab! We visited, then adjourned to the kitchen, making three dishes. What fun. We learned a lot!

    Highly recommend this experience.

Srividya and her family welcomed us into their condo-home for a cooking lesson.  A highlight of our Chennai visit.

If you are curious, TRAVELING SPOON offers opportunities in many world cities. Cross-listed in Viator and TripAdvisor.

We helped cook, mostly watched. We were served a beautiful meal and ate from a banana leaf "plate" with our right- hand fingers. What fun!

The dishes prepared with us were:

Keerai Kuzhambu (spinach steamed with tomato then finished with spices, dal in coconut oil and curry leaves)

Kovakkai Perattal (a vegetable, steamed, then finished with spices, ground peanuts, and fresh grated coconut)

Kuzhi Paniyaram (tiny round dumplings made with fermented dosa batter, served with chutneys and pickled mango)

We gained some confidence that we might try to experience cooking these at home.  We took photos of the recipe progressions.

A wonderful adventure! The home is in central Chennai near GRT Grand Chennai Hotel and the Hyatt. Uber works well for transport.

Our group of New Zealand cricket fans had such a special time with Sundari and Krishna. We learned heaps about Indian food and Chennai life and had a wonderful delicious meal. Sundari and Krishna were super welcoming and it was very easy to coordinate with them, and we came away with a set of new recipes to try at home! It was a real highlight - highly recommended!

If you want to have fun and be in good hands in the kitchen, Jyashree Rajagopal is the best choice. Her experience and expertise is impeccable and her knowledge and confidence in Indian food is amazing. She pays attention to your favourites and can very clearly explain the specifics of each local dish. Her family and home are heartwarming, as is the environment in which she lives. She teaches and encourages excellently while you cook. In addition to the food prepared together, she also serves a full set of lunch with a variety of vegan dishes. Moreover, she and her husband are excellent conversation partners.

Making korma, dosa and coconut rice are learned and practiced with a playful ease.

My friend and I wanted to do something different than usual during our stay in Chennai and we decided to have an experience that would make us learn more about the tradition of the place while tasting amazing food, the perfect combo! Kamala welcomed in her lovely house and showed us all the process, and ingredients and recipes for some indian dishes and then we had our dinner in a very authentic way: eating with our hand on a banana leave! thank you so much Kamala for your time and for sharing your incredible knowledge with us in such a warm and lovely way, you made our indian experience very special!

Booked last minute but Jyashree was so accommodating. The hospitality shown by herself and very clever family was lovely. Picked up from hotel by Ravi, her husband, and taken to temple and local market. Then coffee and conversation at her house before demonstrating a Madras curry with coconut rice, dosa and a tomato and onion chutney. You must also try her Inji Puli, a very gingery and spicy chutney. I took some home (wrap it up well or it will leak from the jar) and devoured it in 2 days. Then came a lunch made with all different kinds of Indian vegetarian dishes. More food than you could ever wish to eat. All in all a lovely day out meeting her and her family. A very personal experience. Nanri

I learned some really delicious Brahmin dishes. Both the teacher and her husband listen to a lot of things and make time to make sure the students understand. You should have this amazing experience when you go to Chennai.
