My fiancé came to Chennai on business and I decided to tag along for a holiday. While he was at the office, I wanted to get out and explore the city but felt a bit overwhelmed at first. Thanks to the great travel advice of a friend, I started looking for walking tours. We found StoryTrails and booked the Bazaar tour on a day he had off to do together. It was fantastic! Our guide, Shobana, was very knowledgeable and even incorporated some humor into her stories about the bazaar. The colors and smells of the market were so vibrant! We had such a wonderful time and StoryTrails provided such a great experience that I booked a second tour solo later in the week - the Peacock Trail. My guide, Karunya, was so pleasant and had seemingly never ending stories to tell me about the sights we explored together. Her passion for storytelling was abundantly clear. I HIGHLY recommend StoryTrails as wonderful, approachable introduction to Chennai. Their tours are TOP NOTCH!

Booked last minute but Jyashree was so accommodating. The hospitality shown by herself and very clever family was lovely. Picked up from hotel by Ravi, her husband, and taken to temple and local market. Then coffee and conversation at her house before demonstrating a Madras curry with coconut rice, dosa and a tomato and onion chutney. You must also try her Inji Puli, a very gingery and spicy chutney. I took some home (wrap it up well or it will leak from the jar) and devoured it in 2 days. Then came a lunch made with all different kinds of Indian vegetarian dishes. More food than you could ever wish to eat. All in all a lovely day out meeting her and her family. A very personal experience. Nanri

Met our story teller Karunya at the meetup point and the wonderful story began. We walked and ate for almost 2 full hours. The sample size portions, allowed us to enjoy a lot of different varieties of food and it was all good. Karunya was great host and we really enjoyed the stories with the amazing food. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to sample South Indian small bites.

My colleague and I were spending a weekend in Chennai and we decided to book this dining experience as a way to get out of the hotel. Shani was a great host and was clearly very enthusiastic about cooking. We were invited into her home and introduced to her daughter and a friend. We were interested in observing how Shani cooked some of the dishes which was great. We started with some appetisers - veggie nuggets/cutlets and chicken kebabs - followed by lunch which included a chicken curry, a paneer dish and a chickpea dish accompanied by roti and puri. Great food and a lovely lady who is passionate about food. We really enjoyed the experience and felt pretty stuffed afterwards. Thanks to Shani!

What a great way to spend the evening! Our guide Sharmimi was fantastic company as she explained the history of the area and the heritage of the busy market area were were in. The food was fantastic and you will eat enough to skip dinner if you do the 5pm session! Highly recommend it!

If you want to have fun and be in good hands in the kitchen, Jyashree Rajagopal is the best choice. Her experience and expertise is impeccable and her knowledge and confidence in Indian food is amazing. She pays attention to your favourites and can very clearly explain the specifics of each local dish. Her family and home are heartwarming, as is the environment in which she lives. She teaches and encourages excellently while you cook. In addition to the food prepared together, she also serves a full set of lunch with a variety of vegan dishes. Moreover, she and her husband are excellent conversation partners.

Making korma, dosa and coconut rice are learned and practiced with a playful ease.

I had a blast touring the bustling Sowcarpet Market in Chennai with Rajesh. I'm a vlogger so Rajesh had to take extra time to allow me to properly film the shots that I wanted to capture, which he did. He also explained the important facts of the market and the food so that I could get myself situated in this maze of history and food. All in all, an awesome experience. I highly recommend you book this tour!

This is the best thing I did during my stay in Chennai - Jyashree, my host, was very welcoming and the experience was so much more than I hoped for. We went to the market to buy supplies (with a temple visit and a little souvenir shopping on the side), then Jyashree showed us how to make various delicious south Indian foods, including sambar which I had particularly requested. The meal we ate was one of the best meals I have eaten in India and I left very full and happy! I would definitely recommend this to anyone, whether you have an interest in cooking yourself or would just like to experience a proper home-cooked meal.

I booked this tour as it seemed to have very good reviews, and I was looking forward to seeing this area as well as the markets. As it turned out I was the only one on the tour and although the tour guide was VERY sweet and nice (must stress this) the tour itself was NOT what I paid for and was a bit awkward.

I was the only one taking the tour that day and the overview said it was going to be about 2 hours and there would be a chance to actually shop at the markets. We met at a hotel and then looked at the vegetable tables, then a rice store. Then we got into an auto rickshaw and just drove around the streets a few times. The guide tried to tell me a few things here and there but there was so much noisy traffic and people etc. (as well as a little bit of a language barrier) that I did not get anything at all from that rickshaw tour.

In the end we ended back at the hotel we started from within an hour, having only seen a table of onions, a rice store, and some random blurry 'from a rickshaw' images of the neighbourhood.

Again, sweet guide, horrible tour. I contacted Wonder Tours about how I got very little value for my money and requested a discount (as I really did not get a tour) however they did not respond.
