Not cheap for foreigners (Rs1000) but definitely worth a visit, easily combined with a visit to the astrological site, Jantar Mantar, across the road (also only a 10 minute walk to Hawa Mahal).

My specific recommendation is not to whizz through the Paintings and Photography gallery. Take your time - have a really good at the miniatures which are just incredible works of art. Equally impressive are the photos taken by Maharaha Ram Singh II. He was truly ahead of his time. Aside from the self portraits, look out for his photos of the royal palace concubines - it’s extremely unusual to see any images of women (who are in purdah and not allowed to be gazed upon by the public). Wonderful!

The General Amar Singh Museum at Kanota is among the better curated museums in, dare I say, all of Rajasthan. I say that because it houses the diaries of an exceptional Rajput nobleman Gen. Thakur Amar Singh Ji and captures unique aspects of his life and learnings from the very interesting times that he lived in.
Each section of the museum is clearly labelled and marked for visitors to understand the timeline. Right from his upbringing, challenges of growing up in a traditional Rajput household with a burning desire to read and write of his experiences in the English language, to his open diaries, soldier’s uniform, livery and right down to his accoutrements as a General and a nobleman. The museum is exceptional because it helps visitors experience Rajput nobility through a life story beyond the usual trappings of say, the city museum. It is more focused on detail instead of general information.

The weapons collection is to be seen to be believed. It’s simply marvellous for any weapons and armour aficionado. Painstakingly curated and well preserved, it is something worth beholding. Many foreign and local history and museum experts were involved, I am told, to put this museum together under the kind patronage of Thakur Man Singh Kanota, his capable son and daughter-in-law, Pratap and Vidushi respectively.

Infact, Vidushi was kind enough to escort my wife and I through the museum, explaining at great length as to how the museum came about and also the challenges the family met and overcame.

I have visited the museum twice and yet, I look forward to visiting it again.
It’s a short drive from Jaipur city and certainly worth it.
