- SarannianChennai (Madras), India393 contributionsVisited the place enroute to Madekeri. We have to take diverted route of around 5 kms. The road stretch had some bad patches, but overall was fine they have a chargeable good parking area just opposite to the entrance. The monastery area was well maintained, the main temple area was very peaceful. They have a place where you can leave your slippers . There are shops that sell Tibetean products , snacks and food which could be exploredWritten 13 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JP3 contributionsMy, the ashram has grown! It's been years since I stayed here last, but a friend of mine has been living there for a good 20 years now. Apart from the main ashram, there's a bonsai garden, the Vishwam Museum, and of course the very busy Venkateshwara temple and the Shuka Vana which is free, where hundreds of parrots, many of them rare, happily co-exist while in their natural environment; some of them would not mingle well.
I really do love the birds, and to see so many rare species together is a treat! I noticed that some tourist reviews from visiting the bird centre appear to misunderstand what Shuka Vana is: Shuka Vana is not a zoo or bird exhibit center.... it's actually a RESCUE CENTER for abused birds that were brought there in terrible condition when they arrived at the ashram, some barely alive. The birds are flying free in an aviary, except while they are still under care to heal from their conditions; a few who have deformities from abuse will naturally not heal fully. No one "clips their wings", like one tourist made assumptions of, but come from abused homes. Most of them have made a truly remarkable and full recovery and are very curious and playful animals! You will find some of the rarest parrots in the world here.
The Shuka Vana parrots are basically viewed by the ashram like little flying gods, and are very much adored by them and are very sacred animals. Some staff relied upon are hired from outside and if they misbehave it should not reflect the values of the ashram. If anything seems amiss, report it to the management.
The entry is free but people should really donate if they visit the place.... it helps to feed the birds and provide medical care for these beautiful, beautiful creatures who have disappeared from the rich natural Indian landscape decades ago due to pollution, exploitation and loss of habitat.Written 17 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SomersetspringTaunton, UK89 contributionsMysore Palace is a great place to visit whether you are staying in the city or visiting from outside. The quality of the craftsmanship in both the construction and the artefacts is admirable. I enjoyed walking around the Palace and the grounds. I don't really understand why the ticket office claims not to have change given the amount they take in. Anyway, I think it was worth the 200R entrance fee for foreigners. The temples are amazing too. Remember to remove footwear before entering and respect the 'no photography' rules.

Located just 25 Kms away, easily accessible by Cab or Rick or even KSRTC Bus ( runs every 15 min) . The intricately carved 120 m tower is very attractive. Even the stone pillars are beautifully carved. After stepping inside the temple made up of stones, one can visit 8-10 shrines located here with the presiding deity being Srikanteshwara . Pond nearby offers bathing option before darshan.Written 18 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Aditya AntikaLondon, UK99 contributionsTemple closes around 5:30 p.m.
When we visited, the main road to the temple was under construction.
We had to go through 300 steps downhill which took 40 mins by slow walking. Its an open temple without any encloser.Written 17 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. That was around 30 years back. Had a chance to visit again on a trip to India and a journey from Mangalore to Bangalore as the ghats were closed, and we had to go thru Mysore!! This place is very close to my heart!! God bless.Written 23 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
