Souqs of Rissani is the main market located in the town, near Merzouga Desert, in Morocco. In fact, it is a very big market divided in some souqs: clothes, sweets, dates (the most important local feuit), spicies (what smell!), meat zone and animals zone (very interesting, especially if you come here with children, because they can see donkeys, cows, bulls, goats, chickens and a lot of different other animals). For me, the most impressive market, we saw in Morocco. Better than Fez, Meknes and Chefchaouen. A hidden gem close to the desert. Too!

Many tourists stop at Rissani and its market on their way into the desert. We had a special connection because our tour company guides were from Rissani, after they left the Amazigh nomad life. We stopped by after lunch on a Sunday in March 2022. We had a currently local guide, Mubarek, take us around the stalls and then to a rug seller before departing.

We saw the blacksmiths, fish sellers, people making old tires into sandals, and the livestock market. Of course, we saw the famous donkey parking lot. Less full near the end of the market time. We moved a bit quickly to make it to the rug shop, so little time for photos or shopping.

Finally, our first rug buying experience. This was outside the main market, inside a building. Mubarek handed us off to the shop owner who, after the traditional mint tea, went through the full spiel. He and his associate laid out rug after rug until we said stop. Once I started the negotiations, we each bought at least one. They were wrapped up in brown paper and taped down into cylinders for easier transport. My smaller rug, shown on my wall, was negotiated down from 3500 DH to 1800 DH, half paid in cash.

Mezane Fossil Store is a store of artworks with fossils located in Rissani near the Erg chebbi sand dunes, a town on road between Arfoud and Merzouga Desert, in Morocco. We came here and visited the place: it is really very interesting, you can learn how the artworks with fossils are manufactured. Also, you can buy some of pieces with fossils. Very interesting and very beautiful works. Highly recommended place to visit in the deserts of Morocco.

Understanding the fossils, how they formed, how they were found, how they are made into everything from cheese trays to magnificent tables and fountains kept us mesmerized for several hours. After learning all this, we simply had to buy some items. They are now our favorite souvenirs of Morocco.

We stopped here on a desert tour with Sahara Services for medfouna (aka Berber pizza). There may have been some miscommunication with our driver, as we though that the lunch options for this day included going on to Rissani for medfouna, but it was Friday during Ramadan so the tour's usual place may not have been available. In any case, our driver made a bunch of calls to secure a different place to eat, although I am not sure. In any case, the food was amazing BUT lunch turned into a full court press to get us to buy some carpets. What we thought was a history lesson became a sales pitch. We wound up buying some very beautiful carpets, but we were not expecting to do so. There is also some amazing jewelery and other handmade items for sale. The whole place is like a museum. I would definitely stop here is you get the chance, and eat some medfouna. If you are shopping for carpets or other authentic goods, this place is also a must. They ship worldwide, so no worries about lugging things home if you can't.

I was taken here by a guide and got the full treatment of tea and shpiel about the carpets. It worked! I purchased a small carpet that I liked but I have no idea what it is worth or if it was made in China as I know nothing about carpets. The initial price was $550 and I paid $125. In any case I now have a nice little carpet that fits in my suitcase and I supported the local economy.

we purchased a necklace for my wife which was not cheap. it was supposed to be silver with coral beads. the necklace was a fake with the coral being bits of painted plastic. do not under any circumstances be taken in by this shop as representing a collective.
