The Botanical garden in Rio de Janerio was a delight! It was awesome to learn about South American plants that we we totally unfamiliar with. We also got to see monkeys which was very cool!

When will Brasil properly recognize its slave past? This is a start, but I’d like to see a museum twice the size of the some of the new ones going up, like Museu Imagem. If you are in Centro, this is a short walk. Don't go expecting a tremendous museum with all sorts of exhibits. There is not much investment here in education about slavery. The wharf, which saw the importation of tremendous numbers of African slaves, mostly from Angola, is vitally important in the history of the Atlantic. Go. Look. Learn. Tell others to go. And google a great Valongo article in the New York Times to get more information. Up the road is the small, sad and very difficult to find Cemitério dos Pretos Novos (Rua Pedro Ernesto, 36, in Gamboa). Combine all of this with a visit to Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito dos Homens Pretos in Centro and you'll start to get a sense for how Rio came to be.

A good place to spent your leisure time at. There is no crowd here to disturb you from the city noise.

It's really increadible as in a big city like Rio you can find a place like this. The fornmer house of the Brazilian landscaper Roberto Burle Marx is surrounded by a very beautiful garden, so big that you might think that you are in true bothanical garden. Besides the natural beauty, you can visit the atelier of the artist and also see the house where he lived. I know that the site is very far from Copacabana or Ipanema, but it deserved to be visited! Due to the distance, prefer to visit it on weekends, but don't forget to call it before!!!
