Highlight of our trip to Japan! We did the Secret Kyoto tour and it was absolutely brilliant! We are in our mid 50s and found it very manageable (the electric bikes make is super easy, the traffic is minimal, and the group is small)
Our guide, Yuta, was magnificent. He was funny and interesting and looked after us all very well. His english is excellent and we learnt so much about life in Japan, the history and the culture of the country, it was wonderful . He even gave us all individual restaurant tips at the end of the tour (depending on what we were looking for!) and made sure we knew how to get back to our bus stop. He knows the best spots for photos and knows how to tell a story, or a history, without going on and on forever.
One of the things we really appreciated was the flexibility of the tour. When we arrived at one of the temples, the crowds were unbelievable (even for Kyoto) and so Yuta suggested that if we wanted to, he could take us to a more remote temple that he likes. He made sure to give us the option of sticking to the program too - but we all decided to go with his recommendation of the quieter temple. I'm so glad we did, it was so beautiful and peaceful that I was moved to tears.
I won't tell you all the places we visited as I think the discovery was part of the fun - but the last stop of the day at the rock garden was exceptional - it was such a classic Kyoto experience.

We loved every minute of this tour - thanks so much Yuta, you were the best! We're still talking about all the things we learnt and the beautiful things we saw - and about our incredible guide!

Lot's of fun. Wonderful route! Beautiful scenery! I was lucky--the weather was perfect--not too warm or cold. I want to mention that the bike was a lot of fun to ride! I've done other e-bike tours and I liked this bike a lot--definitely more than some others. I don't have corrections for this tour but I would suggest a tour focusing on gorgeous architecture and home/building design. I was so often wanting to stop and admire things. Kyoto really is very beautiful.

Fantastic bespoke tour of Kyoto expertly guided by Julian. The e-bikes were brilliant and as Kyoto is big and the sights spread out this is by far the best way to see Kyoto. We loved the little quiet back streets, the temples, path of philosophy and Gion district. The autumn colours were magnificent. Lunch stop in a traditional noodle house was wonderful. Julian was a perfect guide. Very knowledgeable of the history and culture of temples, expert in navigating the little streets of Kyoto and very respectful of Japanese culture and traditions. Directions from the ttain station were perfect. Would highly recommend the tour to anyone who has a day in Kyoto. Thanks team it was brilliant.

Actually, it is if you are brave enough to ride a bike.
Ride a bike in a metropolitan area with left-handed traffic? Does not sound appealing to most tourist.
So what are the points to consider?
Safety fist: You need good equipment. KyotoBikeTour provides new bikes with disk breaks and enough gears to handle the very moderate hills during the tours.
You need guides how no the streets beside the main traffic routes. That what the guides do - we nearly never had to drive on main roads and sometime it felt we are in a small town with nearly no traffic but still reached the main attractions from behind. They also are very experienced in controlling the traffic if needed to make it save for a group of bikers to cross roads or take a turn to a main road.
But it should be mentioned that drivers in Japan are probably the most defensive an polite drivers in the world - so safety is guaranteed.
    Knowledge and entertainment
So why not rent a bike by yourself and go? You certainly could do so, but tors with KyotoBikeTours are not standardized. You do not get dropped of a certain spot and then guided to the next highlight. You get served. The guides are very knowledgeable about everything in Kyoto - culture, history, highlights, restaurants, bars, etc. They guided us through the typical tourist places on secret paths so we always had a special view and very good photo spots beside the crowed which is there even in the early morning hours. Even better - the guides take pictures by themself form the spots with you and you peers - pictures are available on Dropbox right after the event in good iPhone quality.
One the whole day trip (which we took) even the lunch was included. But we were not dropped of at a McDonald or other cheap fast food alternatives. The guide chose a small restaurant that has been listed in the Michelin guide - not expensive but fantastic and local quality meals. Even this can be seen as a highlight on the tour.
So our final comment - if you want to see Kyoto from the inside, get this full service package form KyotoBikeTours (do not mix it up with other offerings - get the real thing ;-)) - we will do it again next time we are in town.

Quin made this cycling tour an amazing experience! The falling red leaves made it extra special at the Tofuku-ji temple and garden walkways. Quin's history knowledge about the locations were very interesting and gave us a reverence for the rich culture and history of Kyoto. The weather was nice for our early December visit and we were happy to share photos and videos as well. We look forward to returning again!

We took this tour with small family including our younger son and it was the best experience! The day was beautiful and the leaves were changing color so it was extra special. The ebikes make the journey so easy. Jay was an excellent tour guide, patient, knowledgable and enthusiastic. He navigated us through busy streets perfectly and we also got to bike along peaceful waterways. This is one of the best activities we have done on our journey and I highly recommend it.

This tour is absolutely amazing! I was a little hesitant knowing I’d be riding a bike through bustling Japan, but Peter made sure our bikes and helmets were fitted properly, and he was an excellent guide! The bikes provided us the ability to see so many things that we wouldn’t have been unable to enjoy otherwise. Everyone in our group wished we could ride bikes for the rest of our trip because we had so much fun. I would highly recommend this tour and I will definitely do it again when I return to Japan!

I did the bike tour with Satsuki. It was a fantastic experience.
The route that Satsuki had chosen was very scenic, easy and very less crowded. He took really good care of everyone in the group.
We really saw the hidden gems and thoroughly enjoyed the whole tour. I really enjoyed the quiet spots in Kyoto.
I would love to this tour again.
Thanks a lot Satsuki. Best Wishes.

We had a great 5 hour tour with Pohat! Golden Temple, Bamboo Forest and Kinkaku-ji Shrine. Beautiful Red fall colors on the Japanese Maple were beyond vibrant. Pohat was a great guide with detailed explanations of all of our stops. 21Km was easy on the nice e-bikes. Great walk along the river next to the bamboo forest was charming
    A very good day.
