We pre-purchased both the tea ceremony and tickets for the geisha performance. Guests walk through about three rooms of art about geisha performers and tea displays that are void of any English before being directed to a waiting room. Groups enter into another room to observe the tea ceremony, meaning a seiko is offered tea and drinks by a maiko in an elaborate ceremony. Unfortunately, no explanation was provided. Guests were seated and served tea and a sweet. Again, no explanation is given. The guest is given the plate that the sweet is on as a “gift”. Then the guest may walk for a short time in a lovely garden.

The geisha performance was fascinating and wonderful. Headphones are available to rent (700 JPN) that provide a running English commentary and explanation of the performances. In my humble opinion, don’t bother going if you don’t intend to rent the headsets. They are excellent and imperative to understand the performances. The music and instrumentation and clothes and dances and scenery were extremely special. The performance hall is very large. We sat in the last row on the main floor and had no difficulty seeing and appreciating the view. No photography permitted of the performance.

My wife and I caught the March kabuki performance at the Minamiza Theater. We rented an audioguide with English narration of the performance. The translation was helpful although it didn’t cover the 10-minute introduction of the show. For the performance, the translation was not word for word but allowed you to follow the flow of the story. The show lasted for 2 hours. I think that there was a subsequent dance performance after an intermission but we didn’t stick around to see it.

I had been told that a lot of kabuki shows are comedies but this one was a tragedy. The show was pretty good for the first hour or so but the latter part really dragged.

I was glad that I had gone to the bathroom prior to the show because I didn’t see anyone leave their seat while the program as on.

Overall I was happy to see kabuki theater once but I wouldn’t sign up for a repeat visit.

What an incredible experience! One of the highlights of our trip. The costumes were wonderful and the samurai training was soooo fun! I ended up buying one of the fans we used, great souvenir!

The show was amazing!! Super fun, the set design and effects were super cool and the cast extremely talented and charismatic. I wish I could see it again for the first time. Highly highly recommend to everyone!

The theater, in heart of Gion is convenient and well air conditioned (appreciated in oppressive august heat). The show was almost an hour with short selections of cultural shows- nice selection but the inability to photograph, especially given the expensive (over priced) tickets is unfortunate. Show is a nice intro to Japanese cultural shows but very overpriced

We bought the tickets including the tea ceremony. It spoiled our expectations right at the start. The whole thing goes on so fast it a ridiculous (less than 10 min). People speak loudly, no one looks and listen at the geishas, and the hostess rush you out even before you have had you tea and cake. It is an insult to their culture to do things in such an industrial manner. Don’t waste time and money on that scam! We did like the dance very much though. The music, the signing, the costumes, seeing geishas dancing in their very subtle and gracious way. We loved everything about it and were very touched to witness such beautiful cultural demonstration. It is one of the highlights of our trip to Japan.

We saw the Kamogawa Odori performance on Monday May 13, 2019. It will only run until May 24, three times a day. We got ordinary tickets (2300 yen/person) about 40 minutes before, but the 16:10 show was not sold out. We got seats sitting down Japanese style (taylor fashion) in a small box with cushion. The costumes are beautiful and the dancing graceful. You can buy a leaflet for 600 yen which includes a 2 page summary in English of the play.

First time in this kind of show. It started with the tea ceremony, it was very short but we got nice plates as a gift. We saw keiko preparing the tea from few meters away. Then we had half an hour time to check the garden and buy some local snacks.

The show itself is kind of opera, couldn't understand much but it's worth to at least see.

Kyōto Kanze Kaikan, a theater specialized for No play, is located near Okazaki Park. I seldom watch No, but this time I accompanied my foreign friends to watch a performance. Kyogen, comedy between No, was relatively easy to understand. Anyway, it is worth experiencing a Japanese traditional culture.

Advertisement in local Tourism brochures had claims of top international jazz/blues/rock acts appearing here, some big names are on the walls and with a cover charge of $40 each I was expecting something good especially after seeing a very good Japanese Jazz band at Donna Lee's in Osaka the previous night for no cover charge. We left halfway through as we had more "bad Karaoke" than we could handle. it really wasn't worth listening to for free let alone paying to hear it. There is nothing good I can honestly say about the night, wouldn't go back if you payed me!

The show is very bad for what it costs, it does not offer good value for money. The play itself does not last more than 20 minutes, the scenery and cast are very poor, I would not recommend it to anyone and I definitely feel it is a scam and a tourist trap. The cost is 5,000 yen per person, the equivalent of 35 USD per person.
