The 20-25 minute climb up to Monkey Park is arduous for sure, but you are rewarded with breathtaking views of Kyoto on a clear day, AND you get to interact with numerous snow monkeys.

Mount Hiei
#15 of 99 Nature & Parks in Kyoto
Very accessible from Kyoto's centre, Mount Hiei has both nature and religion with the summit being Tendai Buddhism's home.
Instead I carried on to the summit car park, which is a bit incongruous, and the actual track to the very summit is chained off.
