Amazing to see all the trains up close, yes a lot of the signage is in japanese but you can easily just use Google Translate on it, very informative and well laid out. The view from the top of the building is spectacular!

We visited this place on November 30th. You need to book a time slot for your visit online at least two days in advance. At the beginning of your visit you will receive a sake jar and three coins. After walking through the museum you can visit the inner courtyard and try three different flavors of sake with the three coins.

Visited here to see what it has to offer. The answer is loads of extensive manga books, with a few unique exhibits to see too! It was more book related than anything so visit when you want to chill and read a bit during your visit.

The Nishiji Textile Center is located in the seven-storey "Nishijin" Union building on Horikawa Street, a 10-minute walk south of Imadegawa subway station. The center contains a museum, factory, shop and gallery, and is open Tuesday to Sunday between 10am and 4pm - entry is free and no prior reservations are needed.

The ground floor has a cafe and restrooms, the first floor has one of the best places to shop for souvenirs in Kyoto as the prices are comparatively cheap, particularly if you are after textiles: with kimonos, obis, silk ties, fabric purses, table runners, furoshiki (large square kerchiefs that can be used as a bag or for gift wrapping), prints, socks and a whole lot more. You can also rent and wear kimonos for photos or to stroll the streets of Kyoto.

On the third floor there are sets of weaving looms, where you can watch craftspeople making Nishijin textiles first-hand. You can also book on-line a hands-on weaving experience where you can try your hand at weaving a piece of fabric on mini-looms using traditional methods. ( ¥2,530 for 1hr).

The fourth floor has a permanent exhibition of some of their most outstanding and historical pieces of textile/fabric work/kimonos etc.

This is the place to visit if you are looking at seeing and buying traditional handcrafted Kyoto textiles - that isn't a tourist trap.

Hidden gem in Kyoto. If you love kaleidoscopes and fine crafts, you will love this tiny museum. It contains some of the most exquisite kaleidoscopes I’ve ever seen. The women who run the museum are thrilled to have people come in, will help you in any way they can, and made sure we stayed to see a 5 min video presentation of the art. They sell kaleidoscopes in their gift shop and also teach classes. 100% worth the tiny entrance fee of 500 yen per adult.

We visited this museum on November 26th. The entrance is on the fifth floor of the building to the right of the Lawson store. This museum gives you an overview of Heian period clothing and explains how they wore it and which colors match which season. An English language sheet comes with your tickets.

This place is a real find and usually off the beaten tourist track for non Japanese. To get the best its advisable to have the benefit of an interpreter. We hired a Japanese tour guide for the day as we were also visiting two other places where only Japanese is spoken. Photos can be taken downstairs but not upstairs. The tour lasts quite a while and isn't suitable for children. The place is very well preserved and has a great history for anyone interested in such things as the Bakamutsu period (Katsu Kaishu, Saigo Takamori, Ryoma Sakamoto and the Shinsengumi used to visit the place). Tours need to be scheduled and this can be done from the Tourist Information Office at Kyoto main station of by a local guide if one is hired.Admission is charged at the front desk on arrival

Kyoto Arashiyama Orgel Museum located in the town center is very popular among the visitors because they can take a rest in the cafe inside or to have a view of the museum on second floor of the building. The displays are concentrating on classical music. Recommended.

We visited this museum on November 27th. In this museum you will learn on the ground floor how the Japanese language evolved from the Chinese Kanji. On the upper floor you can try some exercises to test your knowledge of the kanji. The English audio (500 yen) is recommended if you do not speak Japanese.

I discovered this excellent museum by chance when I was visiting Nishi Hongan-ji Temple which is across the street. They have changing exhibitions and while I visited "The Beloved Gods and Buddhas of Northeastern Japan" was on. The displayed statues and sculptures were intriguing and there were even some explanations in English. On top of that, you'll also get a leaflet in English. There is a small shop and the museum café next door has lovely staff and delicious cakes.

What a lovely little museum hidden away in a Kyoto side street. There are absolutely gorgeous pieces on display and all have English explanations. It has a small reading room at the entrance were you can browse through some books and further indulge in the beauty of the raku art. For people interested in pottery this museum is heaven, others will probably be bored.

It is less the Eki museum itself than the architectural expression of Japan's marvellous past. A must see in Kyoto.

It's not a very big museum, but that just adds to the whole coziness of the place. Exhibits are nicely done in a traditional way.

I study modern Japan but even I learned a lot about Japan's 15-year war (what they call WWII, to include their wars in China in the 1930s), especially about the homefront (particularly in Kyoto) and anti-war protests. This makes up about 2/3 of the museum's main exhibition area and the other 1/3 is about wars and anti-war movements in the second half of the twentieth century, from Korea to Iraq and Afghanistan. Very moving. Way more information in Japanese than English, but still a lot for foreign visitors as well. I was very impressed. There is a separate exhibition space on the ground floor with rotating exhibits, I believe.
