If you are interested in traditional Arts and Crafts, this is THE place. It has many floors so you can find all kind of crafts for souvenirs. Take your time to visit because is worth to know in this gallery all the variety of Japanese crafts. On the 1th floor there is a very complete book store about Japan (mangas, literature, arts, architecture, culture, etc).

Even if you’re not especially interested in photography, stop by this place if you’re in the neighborhood, since it’s free. This small museum has rotating shows. Go, and see if you like what they are showing. If you like it, you can stay as long as you want. If you find that you’re not interested, all that you’ve lost is a few moments of your time.
When we went, two photographers were exhibiting. Both shows were well worth seeing. Afterwards, when I ran into English-speaking strangers on the street nearby, I urged them to go to this museum.
The museum is a couple of short blocks from the huge torii at Heian Jingu.

This is a small art gallery attached to the Toraya confectionary shop and restaurant near the west side of the Imperial Palace Grounds. Toraya is one of the great Japanese confectioners, dating back to its founding in Kyoto in the early 1600s. Entrance is free. When we were there, the gallery contained 39 fascinating old photos in celebration of the Meiji Restoration 150th Anniversary. Many had been hand-colored. We were given a handout that catalogued and described them briefly in both Japanese and English. Photos were allowed, but no flash.

Perhaps depends on exhibition, but we did not find it great when visited. At the time of our visit the shop was advertising some book about pancakes for kids, hence a lot of pancake illustrations. Fine to have a look, but don't hold your breath.

You should visit this shop as part of your wanderings through Philosophers Path. It is run by two older women, who are so friendly and enthusiastic about their offerings. Even though the shop is quite small, they have a good selection of many sorts of prints. They didn’t rush us at all and we’re so warm and welcoming. Now, we’re back in the States, had our prints framed and have wonderful memories around us daily.
