Well for its high tourist number and gates this shrine offers so much more to the people willing to walk further. It’s so beautiful. Well worth a trip.

An attractive buddhist temple complex in red-and-white, complete with pagoda. The original buildings dated from the 8th Century, but they were destroyed; still, their replacements are also old, from the 17th Century. A huge veranda offers photogenic views over the surrounding countryside. There is a bit of a climb up to the temple.

    It is a magical place.
The main hall contains a big Buddha sitting on a lotus flower surrounding 1001 (!) standing golden Kannons (Goddess of Mercy) about human height made from cypress wood almost 1000 years ago. It's a shining army! The statues have 21 pairs of arms which symbolizes 1000 arms. There are different objects in the statues' hands. The statues have many faces (there are 11 small heads attached to the Main head). There are many other statues: G-d of Wind, G-d of Thunder, Heavenly Kings, etc. Some are playing musical instruments, some have wings, some have horse head on their head, some have fin-like brows, etc.
Unfortunately, you cannot take a picture there.
There is also a nice small garden outside.
    Allow at least an hour.

A kinda underrated gem in Kyoto. Despite easy access by Kyoto Metro, people seem to forget this temple amidst the glamour of the Kyoto Trio of Kiyomizudera, Fushimi Inari Taisha and Kinakuji. On the plus side, that gives this temple respite from hordes of tourists and a peaceful vibe

You cannot go inside, the walking tour was interesting but this is something I would skip if limited for time in kyoto. Has small garden, walking around exterior ifs interesting, but it is far from most other things to do in kyoto

We came to the Shrine to view and photo the sakura corridor lining the Okazaki Canal. The Otorii for the Heian Shrine stands at a cross roads near the bridge over the canal. The bridge is a favorite spot for bridal photo shoots and in the short time we were there, we were treated to several of these.

Rather than entering the shrine, we walked along the canal photographing the sakura boughs which draped into the water. The north shore was especially lovely. Every once in a while a tour boat would ply the waters.

Continuing along the canal for some time, shooting as we went, we finally arrived at Nanzen-ji.

A pleasant way to spend a few hours.

We had visited January 4 and most shrines and temples were very busy around January 1 and up until this day but this one was relatively quiet and calm. The shrine itself can be found in the Gion area which is a nice and more traditional area of Kyoto where you can spot people in traditional clothing including some geishas if you're lucky. Just remember to be respectful during your stay and consider avoiding taking pictures of people who may not want their photograph taken.

We spent about half an hour here admiring the orange coloured structures and lanterns. It is like a smaller and much calmer Fushimi Inari and it is very accessible in Kyoto. There were some street food vendors set up in the shrine area but we are not sure if this is due to the New Year's events or if they are regularly set up in this area.

There are quite a few city busses that frequent the area and we used the Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station to get close to the area and walked over. We also checked out the Nishiki Market and spent about an hour walking around the Gion area when we visited. It should also be noted that some shops and restaurants in this area do not admit foreigners or people without a reservation so it might be best to do your research in advance and book if you want to eat in this area.

Every time I visit Kyoto, I always visit here.
Kifune shrine has super nice atmosphere because it is located in the mountainous with many greenery, close to the river and I love the whole atmosphere.
    Many cute cafes too.

near this shrine there is a Kifune Cosmetic which it has many local perfumes and smells so good!. They also serve cafe latte, and some teas.

This is a place where i want to walk slowly, take some photographs in a quiet places, sit and enjoy the nature and traditional architecture.

Ninna-ji Temple is a huge complex. It is near Ryoan-ji Temple. We arrived during cherry blossom season, so there was an entrance fee of 1100 yen for a combined ticket. The museum signs are only in Japanese. We enjoyed walking the grounds, entering some of the buildings and seeing the special 5-story Gojuno-topagoda which you cannot enter. Shondenhokuteil is a place where shoes are not permitted; it is in a lovely setting. Lots to see here; plan to spend a couple of hours.

If you get an opportunity to visit this temple you must. We were in Japan for 20 days and this was hands down our favorite site. It was so peaceful and the views were stunning. It was not crowded at all which surprised and thrilled us.

I visited on a Saturday when there was a marketplace and a special swords exhibition, and thought the visit was worth the rather dreary ride from Kyoto Station.

There’s not a lot to see, to be honest, even with the marketplace and exhibitions. But the ambience is lively and you get a slice of the Japanese social and spiritual landscape. For mythology fans, one of the most famous legendary swords in Japanese mythology is also here, and that was the exhibition I came to see.

Nice neighbourhood surrounding the shrine, too. You can also walk to one of the Randen terminus where a short ride will bring you to Arashiyama.

You have to do advance booking and only 50 people for each tour is allowed in but it is worth it. The view overlooking Kyoto and the surrounded mountains like Mount Hiei was amazing. The autumn foliage was also very beautiful at the beginning of November.

It' s a huge and magnificent complex of sub-temples, some with beautiful zen gardens. There few tourists which is a blessing in gentrified Kyoto. It will take a morning to visit the highlights.

Beside Yasaka Shrine, Yasakanoto or Yasaka Pagoda is certainly the symbol of this area. Or it is even a landmark of Kyoto. It is located on the way from Kiyomizudera to Yasaka Shrine, so many tourists pass by everyday.

This is an amazing area - with walking tracks surrounded by towering bamboo trees. However, the main problem is actually finding the place. If you type into Google the term “bamboo walk” or “bamboo forest trail” or even “Chikurin-no Komichi” (the actual Japanese name for the location), nothing relevant comes up. As a result, planning public transport to get to this location is much more difficult than it should be.

My suggestion is to type in the local JR train station name - Saga-Arashiyama - and follow the signs from the station when you arrive.
