Though the museum is close to the subway, I was running late, so I took a taxi there & the driver said it was muzukashii (difficult) to find. It was well worth finding—very kind & talented artisans work there (+ speak excellent English). They are very patient & make you feel like a star! I took two classes to make a cotton furoshiki + silk scarf. While waiting for my “art” to dry, I got a personal museum tour by the owner’s son. Great info + spectacular art--I would definitely return to take another class again!

    Things to know:
    - Very little English, but easy to communicate with through Google Translate
    - Cash only, but there is an ATM at the 7/11 two doors down
    - Not open every day, so call ahead to see when he will be open. We asked our hotel to call and it was no issue.
    - Generally opens 10am - 2pm, so make sure you get there early as he can sell out of the best stuff quickly

We were looking to get some really great handmade knives while in Japan, and Shigeharu is the place for it. It is run by just one man, who makes all the knives himself. We asked him who takes over the shop after he’s gone, and he told us it will end with him, so if you’re wanting a beautiful piece of history, definitely don’t wait.

The prices are also excellent for the quality you’re getting, and many other knife stores around Kyoto will charge a lot more for knives that are made somewhere else.

I could not recommend Shigeharu enough, and if you’re visiting Kyoto, definitely give him a call!

Putting on a Kimono is not easy and many Japanese people usually go to a class to learn it, or ask someone to put it on for them. But all the Kimonos and Yukatas they sell are easy-to-put-on style, it comes in two pieces and you can easily put it on by yourself. Even a non-Japanese person should be able to do it, just need to read the instructions that comes with it carefully.
Price is reasonable for quality products with great selections, but the best of all is the customer service. I'm sure the friendly staff will help you to pick the best items to suit your needs with the world-famous amazing Japanese customer services.
I'm a Japanese person who lives overseas and had the most impressive experience with them. I'm extremely happy with the Kimono, Obi and all other accessories that they have selected for me to go with the Kimono. Thank you, Manabe-san!

My favorite matcha! I first fell in love with Ipoodo in NYC and was sad when that store closed so when I came to Kyoto I knew I had to come visit. The tea house was very friendly. I love that there was an option to whisk your own matcha. The tea sweets that came with the matcha were delicious. Overall it was everything I was hoping for and more!

My second time. It is an honor and a pleasure to walk in the store. A huge assortment of knives, very well informed employees guide you and help select. A Kyoto visit is not complete until you have been to Aritsugu.

Thanks to the gang here for demonstrating the ritual-rich tea ceremony and for allowing us to participate. Not thin like the tea at home, this was thick and green. Interesting. Shop on ground floor too.

I took a pottery class in August 2023, together with some friends. The class took place in a small workshop in a very pleasant atmosphere. The instructions where simple and totally comprehensive. The instructor gave us lots of choices and examples, what we could produce, and was helpful, if we needed a hand :-). The conversation was in japanese only, so if you don't speak japanese, you will need an interpreter.
After the class it took several weeks, but today the result arrived, very carefully packed. The experience of producing an own teacup was fantastic, so that I definitely want to repeat it.
