So much of Japan is of cultural and historical significance that it was a refreshing change to visit a modern, bang-up-to-date site which is equally impressive. The station is gigantic, built in black and gray granite and topped by a glass canopy above the concourse. There is a huge shopping centre, lots of restaurants and a long, multi-level elevator. The glass tunnel above the concourse offers a dizzying view of the whole edifice.

This is a typical shopping mall of the area. There are restaurants, coffee / donut shops, specialty/ gourmet shops and owl cafes. Need a pair of cheap flip flops or some premium matcha? You'll find it here.

This is located underneath the Kyoto Station Building, however we went out the station building and down another entrance to get into Porta. This place is just huge, with all of the city transport coming together in one place. It's madness. Once you get down to porta though, it is easier to find your way around and grab some food.
We ate at a place called Japanese Bowl Cafe and it was fantastic! Great food, reasonable price, and we got to sit and rest our feet for awhile.
I think it's open daily until about 8:30 pm, but we went for lunch.

I would initially not think there is a bustling food hall that locals use under what someone might initially think to be a tourist trap, but we have learned that good stuff can be in places like train stations or tourist zones - unlike in North America.
If you are in the area and stuck for food, try the food hall. Some vendors also do takeout. There is lots of variety and a fair amount of seating. Every thing from ramen, yakisoba, , beef, gyoza, burgers, sushi, desserts, matcha and more.

I was looking for some non japannesse food and they have a few options here. Ate at this place called Ikanira steak and it was actually pretty good.We also browse through some of the stores that looked kind of different than what we are use to. It has a large arcade area and a movie theater. I think it's a great place to spend a few hours.

The store is elegant and actually appears to be a composite of several different stores under one roof. Should you need/want books in English, head to the two-story bookstore on the two lowest levels.

This place is huge. It's a hub of activity. The subway, shopping, food, escalators. Fun way to spend a couple of hours.

Another Japanese Mall that is close to the bus station with buses destine to the two Osaka air terminals. Pretty exciting as there is a huge Don Quixote store on second floor and this store sells anything and everything. Don't know if this can be considered a discount store but this is the second Don Quixote store that I have been to since Tokyo! Took a while to exit Kyoto station to south side where Kyoto Avanti is located.

My wife and I thought we would stop in here for a few minutes to escape the Kyoto heat and humidity. Several hours later we left having an excellent ramen lunch, purchased clothes and souvenirs and take out sushi for dinner. The mall is located minutes from Kyoto Station and the hotel where we were staying.

Being a major train station's mall, Miyakomichi + Asty Road mall is extremely easy to navigate because it is small, linear and has the right retail mix i.e. shops suitable for travelers and busy office workers. Great for souvenir shopping because they have almost all categories of souvenirs on this one little "street", thus no time wasted here compared to shopping at the large department stores nearby where you'll have to search around for the right products.

Here are the shops that bring comfort and convenience:

    - MacDonald's right at the beginning of this linear mall is great for tourists who simply need some familiar foods
    - Hoshino cafe is the second shop selling famously fluffy pancakes which customers are queuing hours for at its Singapore's branch
    - Bell mart and another large supermarket which has surprisingly good prices for a wide variety of cooked foods. It was always packed with local office workers buying lunches/dinner home.
    - A classy book store was awesome for stationery and book lovers.
    - Uniqlo and some smaller apparel shops.
    - So many restaurants but we didn't know which are good. There's a Chinese restaurant at the end though. They also have the locally famous 551 Horai meat bun/ siew mai/ Chinese food chain.
    - Shops selling three main kinds of souvenirs:
    1) Craft souvenirs + pre-packaged food souvenirs
    2) Freshly made food souvenirs
    3) Beauty/medicinal products at pharmacies like "Watsons"

Miyakomichi + Asty Road are two malls separated only by an open area in between that allows commuters to take an escalator up to the Kintetsu train station. Don't really know the difference between the two malls since they just seem like one continuous stretch of shops. Perhaps Miyakomochi feels like it has more higher end restaurants and shops versus Asty Road. But honestly, feels about the same.

Asty Kyoto was a shopping mall just annexed to JR Kyoto Shinkensen Station. There were many souvenir shops and restaurants along the shopping street. The place was pleasant and crowded at night time when the visitors hurried for their meals prior to taking the train back.

There is a takeout food shop called, Brand New Laboratory Kouzi in this facility. You can try Japanese taste at this store. I think you can eat in the building, but you can also take out too. You can also buy other Japanese gifts at the store. It is a very stylish atmosphere! お土産も買えて軽食もできる清潔感のある施設です。 その中に Brand New Laboratory Kouzi というお店があったのですが、ちょっと食べてみたいな。 という軽食があっておすすめです。

The location is perfect. Just 1 minute from Shijyo Kawaramachi intersection, the very center of Kyoto. But what they sell is somewhat banal. Because their target is mainly teenagers, there is nothing gorgeous. It is a pity.

Arashiyama Syoryuen was a shop arcade on the main street with souvenir shops and restaurants. There were restroom facilities and seats available. Visitors would find this place useful after long walks around the area. During our latest visit there by 9 am in the morning, the shops were not yet opened for business.
