    Bako National Park

    Kuching

Can thoroughly recommend a night here, but take plenty of cash.

As it appeared quite easy to get to from Kuching, we decided to go it alone. We booked the overnight stay through the
Sarawak Forestry website lots of information on it regarding getting there and the trails.
We took a taxi to the boat port, which took about 40 minutes. At the boat port, there are no set departure times; you wait until there are enough people to make it worthwhile for the boatman to take you.
We found a Spanish couple to share with, and had to agree with them on a time to return. Then we had to pay the park fees in cash, and also the boatman, which more or less took all the cash we had. On hindsight, we paid more for the boat than we expected as there were only four of us.
The boat ride was great, and our accommodation was decent - we booked a Type 6 Forest Lodge, which came with two bedrooms, each having a shower and toilet. Obviously it was basic, but quite roomy, and cost approx GBP25.00 for the night. However, everything at the site has to be paid for in cash, which was potentially a huge problem for us. We managed to make a bank transfer to the Restaurant, and they gave us the cash, but it was very fiddly, hence my recommendation to take cash. Everything is really cheap there.
There are several trails, we tried Trail 4, which was 800m each way. It took us about two hours to do 500m, so we turned back. The trail was supposed to be one of the easier ones, but I found it difficult (being 63 with arthritic knees) because there is quite a bit of climbing and negotiating tree roots. It was beautiful, but we didn't really see any wildlife.
Bako also has beautiful beaches, with amazing cliffs and rock formations. Swimming is not permitted, because the sea is inhabited by Estaurine Crocodiles.
We did the guided night walk, which was fantastic with three guides shining their lights and picking out animals for us.
We saw a Proboscis monkey, green vipers, a Buffy fish owl, a silver langur and a flying lemur, as well as frogs and spiders and scorpions. I was apprehensive about doing it, but was assured it was on boardwalks around the site, and I was absolutely fine.
There's a cafeteria on site, which has plenty of food options, and is very cheap.
I would thoroughly recommend staying overnight at Bako National Park.

We bought the entrance and lunch package for RM133 per person. We saw the morning cultural show whereby we witnessed all cultures in Sarawak were show-cased and displayed in its richness in one place was awesome. Would be better if the audio were clear or the emcee speak clearer. I particularly like the interactive of the hunter with the audience, the man carrying the weight of the mortar (real and not artificial as you can hear the bang when he dropped the mortar) and others.
We had lunch after that. Was particularly impressed with their different and respective traditional tribal food and taste. Loved the "paku pakis/ferns" vegetables.
Later we visited each and every unit at the site and were impressed by the elaborate display of the dwellings and artifacts. We tried our hands in blowpipes - which is harder that we thought in blowing to the target, tried playing the musical instrument sempe, tried the bamboo dance tempo which ended with laughter and achievements and asked a lot of questions (if the unit were staffed with people).

Cons- the places/units require some maintenance and TLC ; would assist if there is more information regarding the history and then usage of the artefacts. For example, we went to the Chinese unit and the lady provided a very comprehensive explanation of the pepper productions and the utensils used during the era. thank you. madam

Pros - you get to see the richness of the Sarawak cultures & cuisines in one stop. Worth the trip.

Location- it is easy to get there as you can get a Grab .

We hiked in this mountain as an alternative as the park to climb mount Santubong was closed without notice. So we were in our hiking outfit without any mountain to climb . As such, asked our driver to drop us off at this mountain to hike up the metal road for 5.4km .

It is 30minutes away from Kuching or Mount Santubung so make sure to arrange for transport there and return transport as it is very difficult to get a ride hail there .

Entrance fee is US$4 per foreign person and US$2 for locals . You need to register , log in and log out at the park office . Thereafter hike up 700m to the near peak on a steep mountain road that never seem to flatten . The views from the top is nice and there are benches and covered pavilion to rest enroute . The waterfall route and jungle route is disable if they did not close it off . Otherwise a very good place to workout and hike . Good for a 4 hour hike . It is not Mount santubung, but a little safer to hike in a rainy day which is very common in this area where it rains literally everyday around the year . The only difference is how intense the rain is that they shut the mountains from climbers - especially Mount Sabtubung .

Well worth a visit - at both nightime and in the day.

Feels very safe, no pressure re boat trips or restaurants.

Free light show at 8:30 and 9:30 nightly.

    Lots of photo opportunities

Shame about some of the rubbish in the river but they do try to clean it up.

    worth a visit.

When you leave the city area of Kuching and venture into the countryside you are met with the imposing landmark of Mt Santubong. While we did not hike to the top we were impressed by the low cloud over the peak.

As a crazy cat lady as soon as I read about this I knew I had to go. Located on the lobby floor of the Kuching North City Hall about 10kms from the waterfront/city centre, I spent around 2 hours there. It is comprised of 4 galleries with over 4000 items dedicated to all things feline. The first gallery has several taxidermy specimens, these looked scruffy and tired (and were vaguely disturbing) but nonetheless it was good to see the various species of the area. The rest of the exhibition contained sculptures, artworks and even fashion dedicated to our feline friends. There is a cafeteria in the lobby selling hot food, drinks and snacks.

For me, getting to the longhouse was the best part. Myself and a fellow traveller hired a driver/guide to do a day tour including Semenggoh Nature Reserve and two long houses. Annah Rais was interesting to see, people seemed friendly considering the volume of tourists they must normally see (tourism way down because of COVID, few weeks before lockdown). The drive to Annah Rais was beautiful, the highlight of the day. We made many stops to explore and take photos along the way.

Being very interested in wildlife of all description we opted to visit the Wetlands Park once early morning and then in the evening.
Both trips were enjoyable and interesting for different reasons,
in the morning we saw the Irrawady snub nosed dolphins and a
wonderful specimen of crocodile and in the eveing we were once againl lucky enough to see the dolphins and the proboscis
    monkeys. Highly enjoyable

I was based at Matang with project Borneo booked through great projects uk . Was only there a week, so wished I had booked longer.
The Staff were great and genuinely love theses forgotten animals, especially Dom who went beyond, to help everyone. I’m not going to lie I’m a little bit in love with this man and his lifetimes work with orangutang. His knowledge of the forest, was impressive.
The daily work is hard, and it will test your morals about animal conservation in Borneo.
The accommodation is basic but we all survived lol.. the other volunteers were super fun and we laughed lots, but that’s not to say we were all very concerned about the conditions theses beautiful creatures were kept in.
Want to send a shout out to Steve the volunteer facilitator, a very patient man with us all and an animal lover to his bones.
The enrichment making in the Afternoon, then watching the animals enjoying our labours was priceless.
If you are thinking of going don’t hesitate. It’s a life changing experience.
