- Chris JKyoto, Japan74 contributionsSlightly off the usual tourist track this museum is a former mine about 30 meters underground. The darkness is illuminated with colourful lights and there are various exhibits dotted around which are also illuminated. It's a unique place.
The temperature is only about 10 degrees so you may need a jacket although if you're there in summer it's a pleasant respite from the heat. You can buy a one day pass from the information centre at Utsunomiya station which includes bus and entrance to the museum and the nearby oya temple. If you don't have a JR pass and don't want to pay the extra for shinkansen there's a local train from Ueno/Tokyo a couple of times an hour although it's a 1hour 45 minute journey, cost just under 4000 yen return.Written 9 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Kannon and Buddha sculptures are quite different as these are carved out at the rock face inside the temple.
There is a small quaint Japanese garden and a temple museum within the temple's compound.
Nearby is the Heiwa Kannon statue and the Oya History Museum; and these are places worth visiting at the same time when around here.
Tip: Buy the 1-day Oya Bus Pass to sve some money and for convenience. Need to climb a few stairs to reach the top, isnt much of a problem for anyone with average health.

Quiet place - only negative was slightly worn/cold toilets - but OH!!! The park facilities are lovely (closes at 8 pm) - we had an onsen, and dinner with local brew beer, and enjoyed the excellent farmer's market, walk in the forest and cute little shops of handicrafts and plants. Looks like a low-key Disneyland, without all the Mouse stuff...make sure you get there while the park is open. Very popular with local families for a day out. There are some explanations in English, and the exhibits are interesting even without written text, so even non-Japanese speaking visitors will find it worthwhile. The museum is surrounded by a lovely park. - Stacy C7 contributionsI have visited the museum countless times. The park in which it is located in and of itself is an attraction and worth taking a picnic, a frisbee, a camera to on a fine day. Unless you are disabled, access to the museum involves about a 500 meter uphill stroll past sculptures and a sunny grassy field. We held our wedding party in the banquet room at this museum - the cost was low because it is a city-owned facility. I love the floor to ceiling forest view windows around the outer halls of this museum. The kid area is very cool for kids of all ages. You can see white lions and white tigers both.

In the house visitors can see how merchants operated their businesses out of the "front room" (the one opening onto the street) and lived behind and above the store. These merchants were wealthy and entertained, so there is a massive "parlor" on the second floor. Alas, like many old Japanese houses, the kitchen and private family areas are not available for viewing. But one of the old warehouses was open and had a great display on how the fireproof walls were constructed and finished off with the local Oya stone. So interesting to see!
