Highest recommendation for Augustine's Adventure Africa
Review of Augustine's Adventure Africa
Reviewed April 14, 2016
Let me start this review by stating that my husband and I give our HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION to Augustine’s Adventure Africa (AA Africa) for a visit to Tanzania. There are not enough superlatives in the English language to adequately express our satisfaction with every aspect of our trip as planned by AA Africa.
While I wanted to go to Africa most of my life, my husband clearly did not. He was taking this trip grudgingly and said the same to all our friends. At the end of the first day with Augustine, he got down on his knee and apologized to me, saying it was wonderful and he loved all of it. And it was only Day 1! I credit that solely with Augustine’s Adventure Africa and the trip perfectly planned and coordinated to the finest detail by Augustine and his staff. We were so pleased, we are planning to return and bring friends!
You will see the words “surprising” and “amazing” throughout this review. That is because, while Augustine came highly recommended to us, we were still surprised how this trip exceeded all our expectations of what the experience would be. We credit Augustine with providing us with the trip of a lifetime.
PREPARATION. Augustine provided us with a detailed itinerary and information package which gave comprehensive information about what to expect, what to wear, what to pack, etc. In addition, he answered all my questions promptly and clearly via email. And I asked a lot of questions!
STAFF. We spent ten days with Augustine, who is a naturalist and our driver guide Elisha. Again, there are not enough superlatives to describe them. Anyone can drive you around and let you look at the sights. With Augustine, you get an amazing experience. He has 20 years’ experience and is so knowledgeable about his country, the various ecosystems, the people and their cultures, plant life, birds and of course, the animals. We learned so much from him and it made the trip extraordinarily special. He is also gracious, thoughtful and funny. Elisha, with 18 years’ experience, was an incredibly driver who navigated the bumpy roads with amazing skill. We consider him the finest driver we have ever seen. He too was a kind and thoughtful man. We were humbled to spend our trip with such fine people.
AIRPORT. Augustine had highly recommended that we obtain our Tanzanian visa in advance, and he was absolutely correct. At least 120 people on our flight did not have visas and the line was out the door. In contrast, we were the 2nd couple in line for customs and on the road long before everyone else. Again, go with an experience company that provides on point direction and advice.
Once we had our bags, we went to look for our driver. There were lots of drivers waiting for guests, but only Augustine’s driver had a professionally prepared sign with his logo which we spotted immediately (everyone else had handwritten signs). Augustine stood out right from the beginning. We knew we had picked well.
ACCOMMODATIONS. There are all levels of accommodations in Tanzania, like anywhere else. Augustine selected top places, at his recommendation and at our request. If you are going all the way to Tanzania, why would you basically “cheap out” with the places you will be staying? Not smart. We were so very pleased with all the places we stayed. We were actually surprised how wonderful they all were. From the Kibo Place Hotel in Arusha to the Lake Masek Tented Camp in the Serengeti, we were extremely pleased. Actually, we were more than pleased: we were shocked. Each place was comfortable, clean and surprisingly luxurious. Each place also had excellent staff and services. My husband, who can be a bit of a hotel snob, LOVED each place. Fabulous!!
GAME RUNS. I don’t even know where to start. Whatever our expectations were, Augustine far exceeded them. We saw more animals in any one day than we thought we would see the entire trip. We saw animal behaviors that were amazing. What made the experience so much better was having Augustine explain in detail everything we were seeing, answering our many questions clearly and concisely. Because words cannot adequately tell the tale, I hope my photos can. Trip Advisor would not allow me to post a link to my photo album of our trip. We dedicated the book to Augustine and Elisha, because, to be perfectly clear, they made the trip our adventure of a lifetime. We cannot thank Augustine enough.
I don’t know what else to say. If you visit Tanzania and do not go with Augustine’s Adventure Africa, it’s your loss.
Asante sana.

Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Hayley C4 contributionsMy husband and I kicked off our honeymoon with a 5 night, 6 day northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara, Tarangire) safari through EASTCO. We were pretty overwhelmed with the number of options and operators to choose from initially. Of the ~6 companies we spoke to, EASTCO stood out as not the cheapest, but good value and a respectable, local company - we are happy with our decision. David was very informative throughout the planning process and made it a breeze to get exactly what we envisioned through a catered itinerary - communication was prompt and instructions thorough.
The trip itself was incredible and mostly seamless. Wilson was an excellent guide with 12 years of experience and so much knowledge (never needed a map or directions, answered non-stop questions for 6 days!) - he also had a good sense of humor and was a pleasure to be around which is important given the time spent together. He would speak to other guides along the way to get intel on animal sightings, was flexible but made sure we got everything we were looking for, great spotter and was on-top of permits, timing, etc. Unfortunately our Land Rover had mechanical issues our last day, but Wilson was quick to problem solve and had a backup vehicle pick up from the lodge within a few hours - in time to make our flight.
The itinerary was well planned as far as pacing and activities and we thoroughly enjoyed each of the Lemala properties we stayed in (especially Nanyukie). We opted to go during low season which meant cooler weather, discounts on lodging and MUCH less crowds. We were impressed by all of the parks and the huge variation in landscapes between them, but Serengeti and Ngorongoro are not to miss if you have limited time. Flying one-way to Serengeti was affordable, a cool experience and allowed for a full extra day game drive vs. driving 6+ hours from Arusha. Can't recommend this experience or operator enough :).Written 3 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Everything was well organized, we stayed at great accommodations with great food, and despite our limited time we were able to squeeze in a successful midnight climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai. Most importantly, we have nothing but praise for our tour guide Godlisten - he's the guide the other guides turn to for advice :)Written 5 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Karine O2 contributionsJuma organised a truly great trip for our family ! he easily adapted to our requirements and last minute changes.
We stayed 11 days in the north part of Tanzania and went to different parks. Juma also recommended to visit a bushmen village as well as arts and crafts which we loved.
Samuel and Hamisi, our guides were very professional and always helpful. Their kindness will always be linked to Tanzania. They were both very good at showing animals, giving many explanations and context.

Along with outstanding Elewana camps, the Sky Safari VIP approach to safari is the very best way to see as much as possible and not spend days on the road between parks. Having the private planes waiting for us, then just turning up, getting on & lifting off each time is so special! Great pilots and the ground staff are amazing also - shout out to Judith who sorting everything on the ground in Nairobi both ends of our fabulous trip. This is the benchmark for safari.Written 20 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- MW5 contributionsI had the pleasure of working with Stephen for over 2 years, planning this once in a lifetime trip. Stephen was patient with all my questions and itinerary changes. We had a private tour. The accommodations he picked were indeed luxury out in the bush. The people of Tanzania are welcoming and gracious.
And there are not enough adjectives to complement Joachim as a driver/guide. A masterful driver on the worst of roads, made sure we were comfortable, picked the best spots to get our pictures and was very easy to get along with and a great sense of humor. With all the dusty roads and dirt tracked into the vehicle, each morning we got into a clean truck for the day’s drive. Joachim has a wealth of knowledge of the animals, birds of his country.Written 25 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Our tour guides explained how farming practices and climate can lead to severe erosion in this part of Africa. Over 17 years he and his wife have restored the land at the Giraffe Center with sustainable agricultural practices. They are working hard to educate Masai youth.
The guide was always respectful of the Masai culture, but he has centuries of traditional practices to overcome.
A bonus of the trip was being able to walk with giraffes! (keeping a respectable distance.) It is different being on the ground with them, rather than in a safari van.
I know the price is a bit steep for this part of Africa, but some of the fee goes to bringing in Masai youth and supporting their education about the land. My friend and I thought this a very worthwhile excursion!Written 26 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Our tour guide John was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly enthusiastic, which made the trip even more enjoyable. He went above and beyond to ensure we saw all of the Big Five and shared fascinating insights about Tanzania’s diverse bird species, local ecosystems, and the intricate relationships within nature. His passion for wildlife was contagious, and we learned so much more than we ever expected. The safari felt like a perfect blend of adventure and exploration all thanks to his expertise and dedication. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide or anymore memorable Safari! Paul our tour coordinator was very fast in his replies and great advisor during the planning! - infoA2195TKBerghem, The Netherlands68 contributionsFrom 6 days diving on Zanzibar to a three-day safari tour to Tanzania. Transfers were well arranged and our guides Jonathan and David were waiting for us at Arusha airport with their Toyota landcruisers. Both guides guided us perfectly during these three tiring but certainly not to be missed safari days to Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park. Encounter with The Big Five and dozens of other wild animals and birds. Super three days, ending with a short visit to a Masai community.Written 31 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ElBH6Portsmouth, UK17 contributionsWe were on a private 8 day/7 night safari for 2 people and visited all the major national parks in Tanzania including a walking safari and a night game drive. We loved every minute; the scenery is outstanding, we saw the Big 5, the Great Migration and many animals and birds. Walter at Galloping Safaris was very quick to respond to our many questions and tailored the safari to suit what we wanted to do and to fit our budget. Nothing was too much trouble. Our tour guide, Macho, was professional, fun, friendly and excellent at spotting the wildlife. He was really knowledgeable and explained about the wildlife, the area and the culture. Our accommodation was excellent and all meals were provided and of high quality. This was a trip of a lifetime and we would thoroughly recommend it.Written 28 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Priscilla J1 contributionWe just did a 4 nights 5 days safari with Freddie, everything about the trip was amazing, all the connections were spot on time. The quality of the accommodations were first class. We got to see the big 7. Freddie was an amazing tour guide, he was very informative, nothing we requested was too much trouble for him. Freddie didn't just concentrate on the big 7, he also gave us allot of incite on the little animals including the beautiful birds we came across. We will definitely recommend I travel to family and friends and use him again. Until we meet again - Ahsante sana Freddie and your team. - Alexandra F3 contributionsHouse of Gems did a fabulous job taking care of us at the Gran Melia location. My sister and I really appreciate their professionalism and attention to detail. We purchased two rings, a bracelet, and a free stone. All are stunning. We would highly recommend a stop here during your next visit to Arusha.Written 7 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
