The views from the riverboat are interesting but the most fascinating aspect is viewing the cremation site. You will never forget this scene! You’re not allowed to be physically present on the cremation grounds out of respect for those undergoing the process, but you can visit the site by boat as we did. Pyres burn all day long. Smoke, piles of wood, bickering dogs, cows munching on marigolds, and robed corpses create a surreal atmosphere not unlike what you might expect at the apocalypse. Wild.

A very peaceful and contemplative destination with monumental historical meaning, especially for Buddhists. You will likely see worshippers visiting from other parts of the world during your visit (Sri Lanka and Thailand for us), but even if you are not of the Buddhist faith, the importance of the site to one of the world’s great religions and the history it represents makes it a very special place. There is also a wonderful museum on the site with many historical statues of Buddha. You're allowed to take pictures with a true camera but not a phone camera. When Islam entered India centuries ago, temples and statues of people and objects from other religions were either destroyed or disfigured. This museum has many statues that survived the destruction and you can see just how rarely they were left unscathed.

This is the holiest of all the ghats. Well worth a visit. We went in the day and walked along. We came back at night and took a boat to watch the ceremony. This is a must do with many many boats crammed together.

Morning aarti happens at Assi Ghat (called Subah e Banaras). Can also do boating after aarti at Rs 50 per person. They bargain a lot for boating. I saw they also charged 200 bucks with someone. So be smart.
It's a pleasure to see the morning sun rise at the aarti and boating

Overall place is pretty safe but beware of shop vendors & local people who are always trying to make extra money off you. Place was very filthy & smelly. Garbage was scattered everywhere, cow poo & dog poo could be seen everywhere. Very noisy & populated environment. Good for those who enjoyed bustling & noise places. Clothes & food are very cheap.

Wow! This is an otherworldly experience. The Aarti or Puja is a nightly event celebrating the Mother Ganga River. Tens to hundreds of thousands show up for each nightly ceremony. The evening is filled with colorful song and dance and the performances and even the performers do the same or similar routines each evening. The number of attendees is bewildering and unless you are being guided by someone who knows how to navigate the little alleys and crowds to enter and exit the event, it will be very daunting. Abercrombie and Kent did a wonderful job of getting us amazing seats on a floor above the crowds and we had spectacular, panoramic views as the event unfolded. They also had our departure escape through back alleys planned in advance so we could evade the huge crowds that ultimately dispersed at the event’s conclusion. This is an incredible experience that is on every Hindu’s lifelong bucket list, so if you have the chance to witness the spectacle, it’s well worth it.

All ghats are very well connected. Those who love to walk, can explore all ghaat by walking. The unic part is all ghats are different from each other.

The kashi vishwanath temple at BHU is a must visit. This temple is a replica of the original temple. One look at this temple and one wonders how the original must have been. The BHU temple is open and big and is a great tribute to the original. Over the years, it has gathered its own aura.

No words can describe the place but the new construction made the temple more beautiful, spacious & organised. Now the temple has four entry gates , gate no 1, 2, 3 & 4. Gate no 1 is the very old one inside narrow lane next to mata Annapurna mandir. Gate no 3 is the Gangadwar which is very beautiful. One can go by walking from any ghaat and can take entry. Gate no 4 is also new gate which is on the main road near godowlia chawk. I didn't visit gate no 2 , so can tell much about it. Through out the day specially in the morning the temple is very crowded , long ques in every gate as it's a pick time for puja . How ever in evening the crowd became less . I entered temple after 8pm from gate no 4. No que at gate & it took hardly 1/2 an hour to darshan & explore the temple.
Shoes, mobile, hair comb like this lot of things are not allowed inside the temple . There are locker system where you need to keep all the belongings. There is govt locker in every gate where you can keep shoes for free of cost but they don't allow to keep any other belongings. So they will guided you to the prasad selling shops which are before security check-in . If you purchase prasad then only they will give you locker to keep your belongings.

A quiet and peaceful temple. Many dogs that sit quietly in and around the temple..Away from the hustle and bustle of the Benares city.
