- FHTR In RajasthanJaipur, India259 contributionsThe Maharana Pratap Museum is a treasure trove dedicated to the legendary Rajput warrior king. Nestled near the Haldighati battlefield near Nathdwara, the museum itself isn't architecturally grand, but what it lacks in frills, it makes up for in content.
Inside, you'll find weapons, armour, and paintings that bring the story of Maharana Pratap's fight against the Mughal rule to life. Interactive exhibits and a light & sound show make learning about this historical period engaging, even for kids.Written 9 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I stumbled upon Indigo Art School because it was right near my hotel. I knew I wanted to take an art class while traveling in Udaipur, but I didn't have plans set in stone. I walked by here a few times and casually spoke with the owners - after checking out the reviews I decided to take an art lesson.
First, I got to choose which animal I wanted to paint - I choose the elephant (mostly because its the easiest, but also because I love elephants!) The class is charged by the hour, but estimate that it will take you about 3 hours!
It was such a calming, relaxing and creative experience. The guys were so kind and offered me tea, water, and snacks while I painted. I'm SHOCKED at how beautiful my painting came out (as I am definitely NOT a painter).
What was more special to me was how the artists made me feel like family. The class was amazing and felt so special, but over the next few days, they showed their kindness even more. Every time I walked by they said hello, offered me masala chai and wanted to chat. They knew my stomach was bothering me and one day when I was walking stopped me to give me banana and coconut water!
The people running this place are top-notch. They are talented, kind hearted and AMAZING artists.
Carve out time on your trip to Udaipur to do this. You will not regret it.Written 28 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - fozjonJaipur, India1,897 contributionsthis is quite interesting. The price may have felt like a bit much in comparison with the price of the whole palace tour. There were far fewer visitors here then at the palace, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. There were some interesting items to view.Written 27 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jess Snaas16 contributionsThis was without a doubt the loveliest experience we have had in all of Udaipur. I left the store with the biggest smile. We walked into the shop due to their fantastic display outside, they had exactly what we were looking for. The talent that Vimala and Shyam have is extraordinary. They are the most genuine and authentic creative couple. We loved having a chat with them and their energy was infectious. We will cherish our pieces and remember this lovely encounter. We wish them and their sons nothing but the best. An absolute recommendation to all!Written 20 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Shyam’s forfathers used to entertain at the Mewar court, ask him to tell you about this and he is sure to offer you chai. If he has time he may even take you to the City Palace Museum and show you the wonderful collection of miniatures on display there, Shyam is also a very knowledgeable tour guide as I discovered on my trip in January.
Throughout Covid lockdowns, when there were no tourists visiting Udaipur, Shyam has done his best to support some of the artists whose work he collects and sells in his shop, so that they could continue to paint and feed their families.
Be sure to go upstairs to see some of the artists’ best work. Some of the miniatures here are very like those I have seen at London’s famous Victoria and Albert Museum. Over his lifetime Shyam has collected different styles of work and he sells within a wide price range. He has an artist’s eye for a good painting, and will happily share his knowledge with you and tell you about the history of each picture, the artist who painted it and it’s symbolism – if you show that you are interested.
Udaipur has several other shops within a few hundred meters selling miniatures. Some show you how the colours and gold are ground up and applied. There are artists’ cooperatives selling directly to the public. In other shops you can, at certain times of day, sit and watch artists painting with tiny squirrel-hair brushes and brushes made from camels’ eyelashes. Go see them all, and then return to Ganesham Art & Craft with a better appreciation of the exceptional talents on display.
Directions:
Ganesham Art & Craft is near the Chandpole Bridge over lake Pichola.
Looking across from the Hide-In Udaipur hotel, you will see Shyam’s shop over the road to the right beneath Jethi Home stay. - RituBengaluru, India4 contributionsLocky is really talented. I got miniature painting done on my nails and I couldn’t have been happier! I got this done for ₹350.
We also did a miniature painting workshop which was relaxing and fun. This costed me â‚ą800.
