- BYJU MKerala, India27 contributionsIf you visit Kochi, this is a place you absolutely must not miss! It's a fascinating, one-of-a-kind destination. What makes it unique is that it's a private museum, created from the extensive personal collection of one man. Instead of relying on grants or subsidies, the museum supports itself through the variety of small shops located on the second and third floors.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll sense how special this place is. The admission fee is very reasonable . The staff is extremely knowledgeable, especially Ms. Rincy, and many of them are artisans and craftspeople whose creations are sold in the museum's shops.
There are also large cases of antiques for sale, including stunning temple jewelry, all in support of the museum. The collection is overwhelming in the best way — unique and fascinating artifacts and architectural details are everywhere. The signage is detailed and offers great insights into the history and significance of the items on display. Take your time to explore, as there are treasures to discover around every corner.
Don’t forget to visit the third floor, where you’ll find small shops selling jewelry, clothes, and textiles. Everything sold here supports the museum and local artisans. I spent three hours here without even realizing how much time had passed.
This museum transports you back to the 18th century and gives you a glimpse of life in Kerala during that time. The artifacts, including priceless jewelry and household items, provide an incredible understanding of Kerala’s history and culture in a short time. It’s truly a wonderful experience, and I’m so grateful to have had the chance to visit.Written 13 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ben ALondon, UK23 contributionsFood was amazing, tasty and generous as well as being reasonably priced. The only thing that lets this place down is the staff, not a single smile or welcoming vibe. - Big Indian ToursAsia626 contributionsSanta Cruz Cathedral Basilica, located in Fort Kochi, Cochin, Kerala, is a popular tourist destination and a significant religious site in the region. This basilica, built by the Portuguese in the 15th-16th century, is considered one of the most impressive and well-maintained churches in India. Its heritage architecture is a key draw, reflecting a mix of Indo-European designs. The church is close to the renowned St. Francis Church, making it a convenient stop for tourists exploring Cochin. The interior is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows that depict scenes from the scriptures, while the high vaulted ceilings and detailed pulpit and altar showcase the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The basilica's structure has an interesting story. It reflects the colonial influence of Portugal and the Netherlands, with contributions from the British and King Raja of Kochi, who supported the building and renovation efforts. The surrounding areas are spacious and calm, providing a serene environment for visitors.
The church has visitor timing restrictions and is closed in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., but is open until around 5 p.m. The main church is closed during prayer times, especially on Sundays. There's ample parking, and entry is free.
If you're planning a visit, the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, located about 45 km away. Ernakulam railway station is about 12 km from the basilica. Overall, Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is a must-visit spot in Kochi, offering a glimpse into the region's rich history and religious heritage.Written 24 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Greg StevensSydney, Australia2,882 contributionsThe Chinese fishing nets were introduced centuries ago, but now they're primarily a tourist attraction. They're nice to look at from the shoreline, but don't get conned into going on the wharf to watch and help – it's just a money-making scam.Written 11 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
