I went with my son and his friend. We had a good time boating and fishing. Lunch is included. Food could be made better though. Overall a nice experience.

A small forest in the city centre of Ernakulam, just about 1.5 km from the new Marine Drive. Tickets are cheap, only 10 Rs per adult, but the place could be better maintained. It's a marshy area with various bird species, birds only come in seasons, but we didn't see many—just heard some noises. It's a bit risky since there's no fencing or warning signs to mark the marshlands. You could easily wander into a dangerous spot if you're not careful.

It's usually quiet with only a few visitors; most of them are couples. The bird sanctuary is behind the High Court, so there are tons of mosquitoes. You might also find a colony of bats and lots of crabs in the marshland, which is pretty cool. Parking is tricky because it shares a lot with the Advocate General's office. There's a restroom, but it's in bad shape. The area doesn't have clear walking paths, just a couple of benches, and the rest is mostly muddy. They say the max time inside is 3 hours per ticket, but nobody checks.

If you're interested in history, there's a 200m walk from the sanctuary to the old railway station, where Mahatma Gandhi once visited. The best time to visit is from mid-January to early March. The sanctuary is open from 10 am to 5 pm.

7 km south from Princess street is Kalathara bridge between two backwaters. The area probably comes as close to a backwater environment as you can get to (on foot) from central Kochi. It is a quiet and peaceful area with fishermen sitting on the bridge or nearby lake banks. Chinese fishing nets are plentiful and some even have small engines to operate them. There is a fish restaurant close by as well.

As elsewhere in the city pollution is a big problem. I did not check out the water quality, but garbage is dumped at places and people do not seem to bother about throwing around their waste.

I walked up and down from the city. Especially the southern part of the route is pleasant if you succeed in avoiding the busy Beach road.
