- Tamar DBoston, MA18 contributionsThis palace, which was built by the Nizam rulers of British Colonial Hyderabad, is very beautiful. The inside has been authentically renovated to reflect the mixed cultures. There are lovely gardens, and the outside of the building is well worth a visit. It is now a luxurious hotel and period piece.
The first hour was spent on a tour of the original interiors. The guide (Fatima) was very knowledgeable, and the information was interesting. It was a bit overwhelming, as she talked super-fast, poured facts in a torrent, and sort of pushed us from room to room. She kept stressing that we have to keep to a schedule. A more leisurely pace would have suited me better.
The high tea is wonderful. The tearoom is lovely, a pianist plays well-known pieces, and the food was divine and generously served with grace. You can have as many refills as you like.
At $96, this is not a cheap option, but I felt that I got my money's worth.
It's a 2.5-hour experience, not 4 hours, as stated in the description. She was also was impressed by the amount of knowledge our guide had and learned many new things throughout our tour. I would HIGHLY recommend this agency and specifically, John, our tour guide! He made us feel safe throughout our tour in a very crowded area!! John, my guide, was eager to please. As a solo female traveller, having the hotel pickup and drop-off and guide at my side throughout the trip were important to me to feel relaxed and deal with any hiccups (like the ATM not accepting my card, or random man asking for pictures). My recommendations for other travellers considering the City of Pearls tour is to go for it. If you're going to get a hotel pick-up, consider asking for the guide to come with the driver to pick you up - some drivers don't speak English and havingnthe guide there for the ride gives some extra time to ask questions and hear more about Hyderabad. Navin recommended eating a hearty breakfast before the tour to fuel up for all the walking. I would suggest instead to have whatever you normally have for breakfast, as you should have the opportunity to fuel up on delicious chai and cookies at the start of the tour. I went on a Friday as that was the only day available in my schedule. I suggest booking a different day if you have the flexibility, as some attractions are closed or not accessible on Fridays. The alternative that we did (British Residency) was a good substitute but I suspect the regular itinerary would be the way to go. And my last recommendation is don't be shy to ask John (or your guide) for anything. I was extremely nervous being a solo female traveler but John ensured that I felt safe and comfortable throughout the entire guided tour. In addition, he is extremely knowledgeable and allowed me ample time to soak in the environment while not overwhelming me with dense information due to the history behind these locations. I was picked up promptly at my hotel and taken first to see the Paigah Tombs with their breath-taking architecture. Then on to the old city. First a lovely Irani chai at a renowned chai shop. Then on towards Charminar, with landmarks along the way; the Gulzar Houz fountain, a mosque with incredible mosaics, to name a few. A drive by the beautiful lake , opportunities to learn about India’s wealth of crafts and art forms. I could keep going. The tour was orchestrated by Srinivasan, a true scholar of Hyderabad! He's a great storyteller and he was so easy to talk to and spend the day with. I wish we would have booked more tours with him in Hyderabad. We can't recommend the tour enough.
