If you come to Nanchang as a tourist there’s no reason to skip this site. It is the tourist attraction.

I suggest you come in the evening for the full experience. After 5:30pm one can buy the evening ticket which includes the tower tour and the right to watch the evening dance and city lights display. Each floor of the tower tells the history of the tower and its frequent destruction and reconstruction.

There is also a famous tale of a young poet named Wang Bo, who composed a ballad while attending a banquet at this tower 1200 years ago.

The tour is conducting Chinese and there is no English version. But the grounds, the tower display, and the light show/performances don’t require much explanation. The dance is a recreation of the dances performed in the Tang dynasty, over 1200 years ago.

Although the site is a recreation, I think it’s done well and I can recommend visiting.

Free fountain show that draws a big crowd most evenings. The music is mostly classical but the ending is funny to watch with a huge jet of water going up and invariably coming down like a monsoon.

worth doing if you are in Nanchang

Great panoramic views from the top of one of the world's tallest Ferris wheel, the Star of Nanchang. Operations commenced in 2006, and the Ferris wheel is showing its age.

Youmin Temple is a magnificent Buddhist temple, with a large Buddha statue. Lots of people were burning incense sticks, a few burning candles, and some had brought offerings of flowers and fruit.

Nanchang Bayi Square, covering an area of 7.8 hectares, is the second-largest city square in China, right after Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Iit is home to a fascinating water and light show that takes place at night. Additionally, there is a monument in the square that commemorates the August 1, 1927 uprising. The rebellion failed but led to the formation of the People's Liberation Army.

The museum provides a thorough history of the August 1, 1927 uprising and displays a lovely bronze statue in honor of the soldiers who fought to change the ruling regime.

This used to be the best place to shop in Nanchang and it is next to a Parksons. There is a subway and only subway line near it but it is becoming old. A lot of shops and a Starbucks there as well. We came here for Chinese New Year and my son got a bunny made of candy. Overall it isn't nice as the malls in Honggutan but for the old Nanchang City Center is it fine.

The August 1st Nanchang Uprising Monument is a memorial tower in China that honors the over 10,000 peasants and farmers who made up a revolutionary army. The majority were killed during the initially failed uprising, but this n was the beginning of a revolution which lead to the formation of today's Chinese government.

The BaDaShanRen Memorial is part of a larger scenic area that includes other sites such as a sculpture museum, a general art museum, a small lake, and rather large park areas, with at least two entrances (North and South). Unfortunately, we went during the off season amidst high temperatures, and these other attractions were closed, but I can see how it would be possible to spend at least half a day in the area leisurely strolling around.

The memorial itself is a lovely area. It begins with an entrance to a garden and a flat villa that include a few artworks and some desks and tables originally used by the artists that took up residency there. Everything is written in Chinese, so there won’t be much to learn as a foreigner, but the area is nice enough to make up for that.

The second portion connects to a modern art gallery that displays more artworks, with basic English descriptions for minimal context, but nothing beyond that. The art focuses on flowers and some animals in the traditional water and ink styles. It’s a pleasant walk through the two storey building, and concludes with a nice gift shop.

Overall, if you enjoy art, parks, and gardens, it’s a worthy visit, especially given its central location and its feee admission.
