What travellers are saying
- Orator11Singapore, Singapore7,456 contributionsA great place to visit as it has over a thousand years of history, and is definitely not as crowded as the other watertowns like Zhou Zhuang in the area. We went on a Wednesday morning.
There are souvenir shops, of course, and modern cafes, but this town is essentially still lived in by laround 55,000 ocals, so you can see how they live daily lives. They are quite friendly and happy to chat. There are also 7 points of interests, including the tower in the gardens, as well as an old orchestra that plays tradtional music.
Getting here was easy - we took the Metro line 4 all the way to the end from Suzhou, and the journey took about an hour. There is then an electric tram that is currently free as it is on trial - you do need to use your Shanghai/Suzhou metro card to tap in and out though.
Entry tickets to the town costs 100 rmb each, which you can buy at the tourist office.
The town is charming and you can wander around on your own, or hire one of the rickshaws to bring you around for around 15 minutes. Do also make time to go for a boat ride on the lovely canals to see the bridges from a different perspective, which also takes 15 minutes and costs 150 rmb for a maximum of 6 passengers. Look out for the boat with the cormorants, which are used to fish.Written 1 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The day we went it was hot and sweaty, but there is a nice air conditioned room to sit in, have a cold drink or a tea and snack and cool down for a while. All up it should only take 60-90 minutes to see it, but for me the best part was walking through the old Hutong area to get there. In the nearby area there are many historical sites to see, but unless you know your way around the Hutong, sadly you probably won’t get to see them, as they don’t seem to be well marked. We were fortunate enough to have a local friend guide us around the area.Written 25 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - eoireitumscotland349 contributionsBeautiful gardens set around a ancient pagoda. Once you have visited the pagoda do leave time to enjoy the beautiful gardens.Written 24 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Barbs25Staffordshire, UK3,994 contributionsReally liked this old part of the city, lots of old buildings and narrow streets to explore. So much character in the buildings and paths, some of which run along the canals.
Shops selling all kinds of food, drinks, gifts and unique items.
Great place to spend a few hours.Written 30 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Lingering Garden is a renowned traditional Chinese garden, dating back to 1593 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with seven other Classical Gardens of Suzhou. Occupying an area of 5.8 acres (about 23,300 square meters), the garden is located outside Changmen Gate in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Originally a classical private garden, it is one of the four most famous gardens in China, along with the Summer Palace in Beijing, the Mountain Resort of Chengde in Hebei Province and the Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou. Possessing typical Qing style, it is well-known for the exquisite beauty of its magnificent halls, and the various sizes, shapes, and colours of the buildings. As we had visited in the later part of the afternoon during the off-peak season, the crowd was thinner. However, part of the garden was under restoration with some buildings cordoned off. Nonetheless, we are awed by the beautifully landscape the garden truly is.Written 27 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SAMShanghai, China8 contributionsits just a small, well decorated and preserved garden. Found people inside drawing some traditional pictures. the fun but disturbed part was that we had some crazy photo sessions and the guard there was not happy with us.Written 3 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - iamwenzongSingapore, Singapore530 contributionsBeautiful canal to visit in the evening as the lights line up the sides of the canal. There is a lot of shops to visit and great street food as well. - TOMOSUMICTrogir, Croatia824 contributionsIn the very center of Suzhou, there are several beautiful gardens.
I was with my Chinese friends in one, and I enjoyed it.
It is probably even more beautiful with more flowers in April and May.
It was a holiday, and there were perhaps too many people.
And with that, there was also a nice yes,
Next time, when I come, I go to visit the other gardens as well.Written 4 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It boosts an elegant stone collection, and a lovely pond with surrounding fake mountains. The cost of entrance is RMB 30 per person.Written 3 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Ian AndersonShanghai, China158 contributionsJinji (Golden Chicken) Lake gives oxygen to Suzhou. The lake feels large enough to be like a sea but you can walk round it briskly in less than 3 hours (follow the "Fitness Trail"). Inevitably quite crowded on/near the plaza in front of the famous "Big Trousers" skyscraper, you can excape the throng quite fast. Architecture around the lake is generally attractive - and dramatically lit up in the evening. Restaurants/cafes either near the plaza or especially near the Culture & Arts Centre, also on East side (Western) or SW section. Boat trips available and I believe you can visit the island in the middle with a pagoda. If you are well-heeled, try staying at the ship-shaped Crowne Plaza (v good) on NW shore. Just a pity that the famous fountain show has been cancelled for 18 monthsWritten 14 June 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
