We visited the ACCB as part of a tour and would otherwise not have been aware of it. The organisation specialises in the preservation of endangered species, especially birds. Our guide round the site was knowledgeable and eager to share his enthusiasm. He was happy to repond to our questions. It gave us insights into a different side of Cambodia from the many temples we visited and was a very enjoyable visit.

We visited this Butterfly conservation Centre during a brief stop, on our way to the Angkor Temples. Quite interesting and a large range of butterflies. The Centre helps to improve local welfare as well as improving conservation efforts.

What an amazing morning spent with these magnificent elephants and the lovely young men who care for them. My teen son and I were thrilled to visit this sanctuary, and the hands on experience feels very respectful of the beautiful animals. This is definitely a trip to prioritise near Siem Reap. Be prepared to get messy - it is a delight and a great privilege to share the morning.

It was our first visit to water bird sanctuary anywhere and we were very excited but things didnot went as per the plan. But before going into detail, want to update few things:-

    a) This is a quite remote place to visit and there is no comfortable source of travelling available to reach here

    b) You will start very early in the morning and reach one of the river docks, our route was all countryside and with almost zero roads, so it can be a bumpy ride in middle of no where

    c) Post reaching dock, you will get into a boat which will take you to Prek Toral floating village. This boat is common motor boat and completely open so you might feel cold as its early in morning with wind coming at you at super speed, so do carry some jacket

    d) Once you reach village, your guide will give you some knowledge of area.

Above all is for guidance for others and not issues.

    Now issues I had:-

    a) Language, she was just speaking with 50% things going above my head and i tried to check couple of times but accent is big problem. Still its not a big problem

    b) We started journey to bird sanctuary in a kind of a local jet boat which create noise may be more louder than an airplane. This was the most terrifying part of our journey. How can we have such loud motor boats in natural reserves??

    c) Boat driver and guide were just driving and driving and I had to shout among this loudiest boat to stop so that I can take few pics

Also there is a big man made bamboo/wood watch tower and you can climb it you want. It gives a good bird eye view of area but not necessarily view of birds

I was expecting a more calmer and trip with naturalist which will guide slowly and let us enjoy and capture nature.

Overall was able to take some good pics but nothing outstanding. It gave me more headache then pleasure.

Cambodia government in collaboration with locals need to treat this area with more care and love. Naturalists need to be more trained in accent so that foreigners can understand things better. Lot of things to be done here

Our tour guide Samnang offered us a pre breakfast trip to this recently developed conservation area. We were not sure what to expect, but it turned into an excellent trip with around 50 species of birds seen in around 3 hours. The small boat enabled us to see different habitats and great views. It's great to see that conservation work is ongoing and developing and we very much enjoyed the trip.We would suggest that you need a guide who knows the area and history of the site as that definitely enhanced the visit.

A rather long, dusty and bumpy car ride (from Kampong Chhnang) brought us to the office of Natural Community Based Tourism Merchrey (clean toilets but stock up on tissues). Another 20 km (passing farm land, villages) of a dustcart road and we arrived at the pier. It was very distressing to see the piles of litter, plastic and garbage dotted all along this beautiful landscape. The boat did not take off from the pier landing. We had to climb down a river bank (quite treacherous) and getting into the unkempt boat was another ordeal. No evidence of life jackets.

The river trip is not that gripping... We were taken to the area of the so called Mechrey floating village which we observed from afar and then the boat moved towards the Tonle Sap lake which has fish farms - a few children swimming here and checking out the nettings.

This was a long trip and in hindsight we would have skipped it. I have my doubts as to whether the guide actually took us to the Mechrey floating village. He appeared too keen to promote The Natural Community Based Tourism Mechrey - I would support local initiatives too, provided they delivered...

We had a 6 day bespoke tour with an excellent and knowledgeable guide Phear and driver, who took great care to ensure we had a brilliant time. We visited temples and spent time staying with communities in the forest to help support the conservation initiatives and see some amazing birds. Even when access to some areas was difficult due to it being the end of the rainy season, alternatives were arranged. Would highly recommend.

Three of us hired a tuk-tuk from Siam Reap to go out to the boats at Me Chrey.
Now that the secret is out and tourists are heading out there, they have started to rip people off, charging twenty dollars per person for a very short ride. It should have been 20 - 30 dollars for the entire boat.

Before we even got to the boats, were were stopped at an 'official office' and the man quickly wrote an invoice for sixty bucks. Sometimes you just pay, but I swore I would warn others about what is happening here. We came on the advice of somebody who had came out here months ago. I don't think the lake is worthwhile anywhere near Siam Reap, tourism has ruined it. I've heard there are good home stays near Pursat on the other side of the lake, or you could go just for a day. Hope this helps.

By the time the boat actually got out of the canal and onto the lake, we only had 45 minutes on the water, stopping at a 'crocodile farm' for twenty minutes, where they sold souvenirs, food and drinks, the usual rubbish.
