- Michael BBellflower, CA24,406 contributionsWhen we tried to visit Orlando's Column it was wrapped in a protective cover, and the courtyard around it and Saint Blaise Church were surrounded by a decorative safety barrier. From what we could see they were replacing the old paving stones in front of the church and base of the Column.
Orlando's stone column was carved in the form of an ancient knight, with a small platform on top for public announcements in1418, by local sculptor Antun Dubrovčanin and Italian master sculptor Bonino di Milano.
Legend says that it was created to honour a 9th century knight called Orlando, who sailed into the city and saved it from a fifteen-month siege by the Saracens. But truthfully the Orlando, or Roland figure how he is called throughout Europe, was to show alliance to the Hungarian-Croatian King.
For many years the forearm of the statue was used as the standard measure of the Ragusan cubit, also as a place of public punishment.
Today it is the center piece for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival opening and closing ceremony, with banners flying high above the column.
TIP: When the repairs are finish, go really early to avoid all the cruise ship passengers to get tourist free photos.

Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Michael BBellflower, CA24,406 contributionsLocated on the Brsalje terrace between the Pile Gate and the Visitor/Tourist Info center, is the Statue of Aphrodite and Pan. Built in 1902 it shows the statue of pan holding a sheep with Aphrodite standing by his shoulder.
This is a very popular meeting place for tour groups, and cruise ship passengers waiting for transport back thier cruise ships. There are under the tall cool trees plenty of places to sit, and people watch.
TIP: The public toilets are directly across the road.

In June 2003, the 83 year old pontiff made an historic visit to Croatia, his third to the country.
It was also marked the 100th foreign visit of his papacy making him the most travelled Pope ever.
The life-size statue depicts his holiness in a standing position. It was erected to acknowledge the affection and esteem that the Croatian people had for Pope John Paul II.

Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - David DDevon, UK19,793 contributionsMonday 13th June and we saw this memorial on a roundabout outside the main building of the Port of Gruž, in Dubrovnik.
Initially it looked like a large rock, with an old anchor on one side and a large oblong stone on the other.
We did notice a square plaque on the front of the large rock.
Inscribed on the plaque is the name Vlaho Škilj and the dates 1950 to 1991. A bunch of red roses and a sprig of white flowers were positioned above the plaque.
The memorial has been placed there by Police Association of Veterans of the Dubrovnik 91 Police Department.
It honours their fallen comrade in arms, Vlaho
Škilj who died on the 6th December 1991 at 14.00 in the Port of Gruž. He was a member of the MUP (Ministry of the Interior) Reserve.
