- ragtop_riderAmesbury, MA322 contributionsBrewery Silvaticus has an awesome "industrial" vibe, and even more awesome beer. Fresh brewed with excellence onsite...just does not get any fresher. The variety is great, as long as you like anything but an IPA. That's ok because, for a dark beer lover like me, the place is perfect. I HIGHLY recommend the smoked beer..it is amazing. Stop by for a brew!Written 11 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Maurene_KDover, NH12,593 contributionsAfter visiting the Union Congregational Church of Amesbury, I went across the street to Alliance Park on the Point Shore section of Amesbury.
Alliance Park was a medium-size park owned and maintained by the Amesbury Improvement Association. It was a scenic spot adjacent to the Main Street Swing Bridge, a/k/a the Powwow River Bridge, with The Marina at Amesbury Point off to the right on the other side of the bridge. Other views were of the confluence of the Powwow River and Merrimack River as well as Maudslay State Park directly across the Merrimack River. Lowell's Boat Shop was off to the left back around the bend of Main Street.
At the time of my visit, it was a hot day in the mid 80’s with very high humidity, but there was relief from the onshore easterly breeze at about 10 MPH which made being outdoors there bearable. Also, being next to the river and with some shade trees, the park was a much cooler place to be. Several individual men and women were at different picnic tables or park benches enjoying the cool spot. I found that the local people were friendly. I spoke with a man and then a woman.
In speaking with a knowledgeable local, I learned that the park was named after a ship that was built nearby at the Daniel Webster Shipyard. It got its name from the alliance between France and the American colonies during the American Revolutionary War. Reportedly, it carried Major General Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de Lafayette, across the Atlantic three times. The ship also served as the flagship for John Paul Jones for a time.
While I was walking along the main path along the river, I saw a young man carry a kayak to a small launch area off to the side where the Powwow River --- its official spelling --- was. Then, he went back to his vehicle and returned with his dog and life jackets. He put them on before launching his kayak. There was no open end on the Merrimack River side, so any kayakers would have to go up the Powwow River first before entering the Merrimack River which seemed to have a swift current.
For its history, riverfront location, scenic views, and plenty of places to picnic and/or sit in the shade, I rate Alliance Park at 5.0 and recommend a visit particularly on a hot, humid day.

- Maurene_KDover, NH12,593 contributionsAfter breakfast at The Hollow Café, I visited the nearby Main Street Congregational Church.
Its location back from the street provides a frame for a picturesque setting. And, since it faced south, the entire façade got full sun in the early afternoon which the time of day I visited.
Different elements of the architecture suggested a blend of styles to me. The portico with columns suggested Greek Revival and/or Classic Roman. The three entrances hinted at Federal, but the arches leaned toward Greek Revival. The triangular shape of the rooflines showed a decided Federal style influence. The pointed arches on the octagonal louvered cupola just below the steeple suggested a Gothic Revival influence. From these elements of style, it appeared to me that the church may have undergone alternations over the years.
The present building was acquired from the Unitarian Congregational Society in the 1832-1833 timeframe.
As a historical piece of architecture, I rate the Main Street Congregational Church at 4.50.

- Maurene_KDover, NH12,593 contributionsDeer Island is mostly a recreational area approximately in the middle of the Merrimack River on the border of Amesbury and Newburyport. There are a couple of homes on the upriver side.
The island is accessible by car via Spofford Street and the Chain Bridge from the Newburyport side and via Main Street and the First Lieutenant Derek S. Hines Memorial Bridge from Amesbury.
There is a mid-sized parking are just off the road that can accommodate several vehicles.
The island is a good place for a ½-mile mile walk in a forested area.
Leashed dogs are permitted.
Birding and fishing are other popular activities. One can also get scenic views of the Merrimack River.
The trail is pretty easy for adults and not particularly difficult for youngsters.
A caution: Be careful not to get too close to the shoreline and wind up in the Merrimack River because it has a very swift and strong current.
I enjoyed my walk in the woods there and rate Deer Island at 4.25 and can recommend a visit.

There was a cluster of three places to visit at the part of Main Street where the Union Congregational Church is located.
As an admirer of architecture, I visited the Union Congregational Church of Amesbury first.
I parked at Alliance Park which is just across the street from the church.
The church is an interesting and excellent example of the Greek Revival style. It is also a fine example of a New England white clapboard church. And, it also incorporates other styles.
It was constructed in 1835, reportedly by local shipwrights. The vestry building is to its west. That was constructed in 1854. It was later attached to the church in 1892 by using an old horse shed as a connector. That was Yankee ingenuity at work.
I learned that the building is on the National Register of historic Places.
The main façade has two symmetrically-located entrances. Each entrance has sidelight windows.
Palladian windows are over each entrance with a fanlight window above and between the Palladian windows. Palladian windows are a classic window style invented by Andrea Palladio, a famous architect who lived during Italian Renaissance Period. The fanlight window became a very popular feature on Georgian style buildings from the 1700’s and beyond.
The multi-stage tower has a square section with an open belfry with arches. Next is an octagonal section topped by a rounded cupola. Atop the cupola is an interesting weathervane that appears to have flames trailing on the back – a comet or meteor, perhaps.
In photographing the church, I found that there were a lot of utility wires in the way. I had to walk toward the beginning of the Powow Bridge to get a less-cluttered photo.
For its classic styling and well-kept appearance, I rate the Union Congregational Church at 5.0 and highly recommend visit along with a stop at Alliance Park which is on the shoreline of the Merrimack River.

Inside, I saw a number of items that I liked. The best thing was a large wall hanging of a music staff. It was too big for my house. It was one of several one-of-a-kind things i saw in the shop.
The man in the shop was very pleasant to talk with. He was tending the shop while the owner was away.
I rate Madeline’s Antiques & Collectibles at 4.50 and can recommend a visit.
