The National Gallery is imposing, housed in the former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings, both of which have been skillfully combined with due recognition to their status as national monuments. Wished that we could have spent more time viewing all the exhibits but limited ourselves to viewing the contemporary art. Certainly not my forte but some of the exhibits were impressive in scale and composition. Wabi Sabi by artist Teo Eng Seng, an acrylic on canvas is described as "transposing the language of paperdyesculp onto tapestry" was eyecatching and a work that stretched over a 20-year period. The artwork beneath by Ah Wah and Ah Kiat, Crossing Borders, was no less impressive and consisted of 200 figures mounted on motorcycles and representing the daily commune across the Johore-Singapore Causeway. Two sculptures were gold coloured, the artist's intention to break up the monotony of the scene and emphasise the individuality of every worker. The roof garden featured a kinetic sculpture, Glisten, by artist Lisa Reihana, a mural of shimmering coloured reflective triangles representing weaving patterns. we also admired the more traditional exhibits in other galleries. Worth visiting and worth heading to the roof garden for views of surrounding buildings and the city beyond.

It was an overall great experience.
We chose the 4 courses menu. Food was really good but service a bit behind.

The building is situated in a noisy and bustling part of the Little India district in Singapore, but going in, the feel is very different as it is quiet, cool and relaxed.

Even for a local like myself, the exhibitions on the 3rd and 4th levels of the building about the Indian community in Singapore both past and present are refreshing as they relate the contributions made by this minority community as well as the rich experiences they came with when many of these ones migrated over to Singapore in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy a slow and relaxed way of learning more about the Indian diaspora in this part of the world.

This is great for a sense of history. The Ground floor has a timeline and examples of equipment used over the first hundred years of the Fire Service.

The Upper floor has some activities to tell kids what they SCDF does, not really engaging for young children.

Visited on a recommendation and were very impressed. The center specializes in printmaking and pushing the boundaries of that art form. Also, has artists in residence producing work, and finally offers works for sale. Really interesting collection and learned a lot about contemporary printmaking field.

Wonderful venue, stunning building. Excellent staff who were very helpful when trying to get tickets booked online as they were cheaper. The Monet experience was beautiful and well worth seeing.

One of SG's oldest galleries, celebrating 20 years in 2017, and only one single review (a Wiki bio) and no update regarding the new premises. Fair enough, I guess you dont come to SG for the art, and this ain't The Louvre.

It is a good galley though, if only a little out of the way, down by the port.

To make the most of your efforts and make the inconvenient location worthwhile, here are a few tips.

    • Check the webpage and call ahead to make sure the gallery is open with an exhibition

    • Match your visit time with the hours of Artspace at Helutrans (in the same building)

    • Enjoy the amazing BKT nearby, it is an institution

    • Travel by bike

Although a little hard to find, this gallery is a real gem and an asset to what is quite a commercial art scene in Singapore. It is a charity and therefore relies on donations and the support of the public and private sectors. They exist to give artists a rare opportunity to showcase their work without the motive of profit. In a money-driven society like Singapore, the Private Museum is refreshing in its approach, and worth supporting. The building it is in is also worth checking out.

This place is now permanently closed. Bu if you're in the area it's still worthwhile to have a walk around Fort Canning. Good views over the city and a nice park to explore.

With great trepidation made my way to the new site of SAM as my last visit had been fraught with anxiety over the industrial factory location which was hard to access, and dangerous for anyone over 60 years old, and impossible for the wheelchair bound or visually- handicapped.
This time it was even worse as the ramp was under construction and the side-gate no longer there so you couldn't slip in from the bus-stop or exit through it. After walking endlessly in the hot sun, and at one point under a swaying construction gondola, you come to the end, descend and
walk further until you reach the elusive entrance . I only found it after asking a kind and helpful worker who happened to be there.
The current art installations are very good indeed, original, visually impressive and with a profound message and backstory. A pity all these have to be housed in such an unfriendly and inaccessible location. One of the staff attendants/guards was most forthcoming in helping to direct me to the relevant rooms and was even willing to share his insights, the others not quite so. At the cafe, there are plenty of local books displayed by Epigram Publishers, a very welcome inclusion.
