However, it was informative and an interesting park to walk around. Although it was open to walk around on a Monday, parts of it were closed. Entrance was free and there is an MRT station just a couple of minutes from the main gate. - Craig DPerth, Australia391 contributionsWe recently stayed for a few days in Singapore and had breakfast in Chijmes each day. The cafe opens at 8.00am unlike most others around that open at 10.00. It is not cheap but cheaper than eating at a hotel and comparable to Perth prices. They have a reasonable menu. The other restaurants and bars in the complex are terrific. There are two Indian restaurants, several bars at ground level and a few modern cuisine restaurants. The only let down is that there are not many toilets and finding them can be fun. - Claude M31 contributionsThe houses are very unique and cute. We just took a Grab (Uber) to get there. Get your camera ready to take amazing pictures. Grab a bite to eat after your visit. There is a great authentic food court.

The tour starts at 10am & they request you arrive beforehand. The area around this house is also Peranakan, so worth a mooch. The tour was about an hour but the guide made it so interesting & informative. - Zfy EdSingapore, Singapore10,842 contributionsAs I have resumed my cultural and historical walking trail, my first in 2023, I am starting in Balestier and visited this memorial hall of Dr Sun Yat Sen, the founding Father of modern China! He is one of my most respected and adored "idols".
It has been about 7 years since my last visit here - Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (孙中山南洋纪念馆，又称晚晴园).
The two storey colonial styled villa has a nice garden and is peaceful and although it's much smaller in size than other museums, it has quite a good collection on Dr Sun and the early history of Singapore, especially about the Chinese communities then.
The exhibits are interesting and insightful, with digital and interactive platforms to bring the history "live".
Dr Sun, the great revolutionary leader against the Qing dynasty who overthrew the government after 11th uprising attempt in Wuhan and formed the modern Republic of China (中华民国), had his ideologies left a great impression in me. They were 天下为公 and 三民主义!
The world belongs to everyone and not just for the few elites. And if everyone is being treated equally, justly and fairly and everything is done in accordance to the law and order, the world will be a better, more peaceful and stable place to live in.
It is good to be back here for a revisitation, the place Dr Sun had stayed during his visits to Singapore and immersed in the rich, diversity and colourful history and legacy of Dr Sun!
There's also a portion of Singapore's history too, mainly about the Chinese communities during the Sino-war, Japanese occupation etc.
The museum is closed on Mondays and admission is free for Singaporeans and $8 for tourists.

The food was top notch in terms of both presentation and flavour, the staff were great with the roaming drinks service throughout the evening and the general atmosphere was spot on. Of course one of the selling points at this venue is the terrace and location across the bay, which never disappoints.

Starting from New Bridge Road end, do take note of Nos 42-45 now called Empire Loft. It won the 2006 Architectural Heritage Award from URA. It was built in 1930s by the precursor to HDB, the Singapore Improvement Trust, to house the civil servants from the Custom Department during the British colonial days. It was built with a wide backlane to allow lorries to remove the nightsoil. It is now upscale apartments in the upper floor and commercial shops on the ground floor. It consists of four-storey shophouses which is unusual as most shophouses are only two or three storeys high. During conservation, the unique timber windows with heart-shaped perforation were retained. Tai Thong Cake shop is found further down the street. Many of the shophouses here have classic Baroque facade.
At the end of the street along South Bridge Road is the National Monument, Jamae Mosque. Crossing South Bridge Road to Mohamed Ali Lane will enable one to see the Yip Yew Chong murals-Dreams Of Chinatown and Paper Mask & Puppet Seller. The mural gives a glimpse of how different races lived together in Chinatown. Unfortunately it seems that it is no longer open to the public.
