We just had a meal nearby when we walked past the Mkt. It is situated along Des Voeux Road, near Queen Victoria Street side. 中环街市 definitely looks revamped from the outside, looking back we have not been here over a decade!
The place has a history dating back to 1842 as one of Hong Kong’s first wet markets. and undergone through several multiple transformations. This time round it was indeed a surprise to us; so clean & air-con plus the people who visited are different from the olden days!
The latest version is an improved revamp of the 4-storey building finally open to the public after four years of construction and restoration efforts, Gone were the loud din, cramped, wet floor and hawkers hankering their sales. a little missing them indeed. It became a clean air-con and well organised, in fact spanking clean as we walked up/down the wide staircases.
Some of the rather memorable stalls which we visited include Asok Thai cake, Mammy Pancake, Hello Molly, Hong Kong Tram Store, Blooms coffee,… not to forget the Hong Kong Tram Store, for example, sells collections of old-school souvenirs that take you back to the later years of 20th-century Hong Kong.
To serve its new purpose of engaging community on the first floor a 2,500 sqft of multi-functional event space has been designed and craved out. For use as open forums, exhibitions and cultural performances.
Will drop by again to see how’s the development like.
