- JohnBorgloon, Belgium3 contributionsIce and snow sculptures we usually all have seen somewhere, bur very seldom to this extent. So many sculptures and buildings, nicely illuminated by lights.
I know Harbin in Heilongjiang province is the most famous, but this festival is very close to Beijing. The trip takes half a day only. We did it February 2011, by car.
Friends of me visited us during Chinese new year in Beijing. We included the trip in their visit.
We left BJ at 15:00. We arranged for dinner in a nice restaurant in Yenchin, on the way to Longqing. If you are in Beijing during spring festival you have to check out one or more of the city’s temple fairs. We took subway line 10 to pangjiayuan and walked from there about 15 min. The park was a lot bigger than we expected and it took a good hour to walk around. Lots of decorations, food stalls and shows like lion dance. I would like to come back to the park during summer as it seems like a beautiful park. - Fah C85 contributionsWe went there last Sunday. The place was filled to the brim! If you live in Beijing, you can actually use your subway/bus card (交通卡) to enter the festival (10 yuan). The park is pretty big with a big lake in the middle. - FruitfanaticAnchorage, AK89 contributionsTo get to the Lama Temple we took Line 5 and got off at Yonghegong (Lama Temple). After exiting the train station, turn left and keep walking. After several minutes you’ll reach the Lama Temple. It cost 35RMB to enter the temple. Once you get your ticket (2 ticket slips and a small disc) you’ll go through a quick security screening where they will quickly have you open your bag for them to see. Don’t dwell on this too long; they’ll just want a quick peek. Then you’ll head up for the ticket takers to scan your ticket and you enter a nice and shaded walkway where everything is green. It’s so earthy and nice. Before you actually enter the temple, there will be a lady at a window on both opposite sides passing out free incense. If you don’t pay attention you can miss this and head into the temple without knowing that you get free incense to burn. Once you have the main temple you’ll be smelling a lot more incense as people are constantly praying and burning incense. This is a Buddhist temple so you’ll see the occasional Buddhist walking. I believe you aren’t allowed take photos of them. They’ll have several small halls for you to enter and view/pray. You can only light the incense for those outside and not the halls. It’s a nice and refreshing place to view, not much to do here except pray and see how the temple is utilized. - Hansjoerg RUster, Switzerland130 contributionsBadachu is a park in the North West of Beijing. It has several wonderful Temples with Budda's inside or other god's. People pray here and the atmosphere is relaxed and quite. If you just go straight up from the entrance you will pass automatically all the temples. If you go right you can hike up the hill either on a street or a small beautiful way in the forest. On top you can take the cable car down or a toboggan. Some nice restaurants are also in the park. They also have concert or theater on stage and it's worth to check when it is. I joined a classic concert partly and it's always such a pleasure if the people start to sing if a famous song is played. Inside you will also find some historic information or sometimes artist exhibition. Did some research on Trip Advisor and read about this Changdian temple fair - stated to be the oldest temple fair in BJ... seemed like a place not to be missed..
So early one day we set the car GPS head out.. find the TaoRan park without much difficulty...
Great park, lots of activity, tons of people milling around, many dances happening, lovely pavilions, bridges , there is even a artificial snow mountain with activities for kids etc...
BUT NO TEMPLE FAIR..!
TripAdvisor clearly said that till 2011 this fair was at a different location and then in 2011 it had relocated to this park...
