- Ronald LDenver, CO3,054 contributionsWe entered the extremely crowded Summer Palace. Lots of small buildings, as you entered all extremely important to the story of the grounds. Most you could not go into, just look in the windows. You come to an extremely large lake with all kinds of
watercraft going in all directions. There was an island with a bridge to it to the south. A long covered walkway went around the N side of the lake. Beautiful paintings and decorations on the inside all the way. At the end of the covered walkway, you could look up the hill to the Summer Palace. Supposedly you need to climb about 500 steps
to reach the palace. Since we had already covered over five miles today we opted not to go up to the palace. Christina, our guide, explained everything very well and made sure we had all the relevant information. Highly recommend this tour by Klook. Pretty warm day so a nice cold can of beer helped with the walk. Would get very busy at night with a large selection of bars & restaurants on the street or nearby over the bridge. - Carthage DMartin, TN1,023 contributionsThis is what would be considered an upscale hutong by Chinese standards. It was originally built by the brother of the emperor. Structures are more substantial and a better building quality than your normal run-of-the-mill hutong.
The houses intermingled with the local shops make for an interesting walk. Twenty or thirty years ago most of Beijing looked somewhat like this.

It offers something for ever member of the family, bars, ice cream shops, gift stores, retro shops, snacks and clothing. Based on the prices for ice creams and snacks, I’d say everything is overpriced by about 40% but you are in a touristy area so to each his own. The only thing I did not appreciate is the delivery drivers speeding on scooters down a crowded street so if you have small children, you must be vigilant. Great area to stay to explore the surrounding mountains and villages. If you turn left in the opposite direction of Wangfujing Street, it's good to get away from the expensive shops etc and see Hutongs all along Dongsi South Street. There is a mosque at no 13 and the famous Donglaishun restaurant opposite. Its quiet and walking through the Hutongs gives you a sense of how people live. Highly recommend and take it in!! This stretch of alley was rather quiet, as the majority of local visitors congregate along the touristic Nanluogu south-north alley. I wanted to visit the Wan Rong’s Former Mansion (No. 35 & No. 37) & Keyuan Garden (No. 9). Unfortunately, they were closed, with signs “No visitors allowed”. The entry can be walk up or cable car at the base of Gubei Water Town which is a very nice new development with great hotels, restaurants and shops. Went inside a “preserved” village and the owner explained some history behind her house. It has retained the charm and culture of traditional Beijing with its new restaurants and hidden bars and quirky fashion stores and boutiques. - TanSuoTravelLondon, UK271 contributionsThe Panlongshan or "Coiling Dragon Mountain" Section of the Great Wall is one of the few sections that is open to tourists but hasn't as yet been officially restored, meaning it is one of the last remnants of the wild Great Wall. For this reason, parts of the wall are crumbling and vegetation peeks through the cracks, endowing this section with a certain ruined beauty.
If you want to visit this breathtaking section of the wall, you will probably need to dedicate at least a day or perhaps 2 days to get there first. You can either hire a car/taxi directly from Beijing, which will take just over two hours, or you can take public transport, which may take upwards of 4 hours. You'll first need to get the 980 Express bus from Dongzhimen Station in Beijing to Miyun (密云) and then transfer to 密25, which will take you to the small town of Gubeikou (古北口镇). You'll want to get off at the second stop in Gubeikou. For this reason, we'd recommend staying overnight either in Gubeikou or at one of the guesthouses near to the base of Panlongshan.
Gubeikou itself is a picturesque little town with plenty of history. It once served as a garrison town along the Great Wall and is littered with a number of small temples, as well as several old buildings. The town is currently being developed for tourism, so be sure to visit it as soon as possible before you lose the chance to see it at its most authentic!
Once you arrive at the entrance to Panlongshan, you can either go left or right. If you choose to go left, the views are incredibly beautiful, but you will only be able to hike for about 2 hours before you reach a dead-end, as this part of the wall becomes dangerous to the point of being impassable. Alternatively, if you go to the right, you can hike for about 2 hours along the wall itself, then take a 1 hour hike through the woods, which will eventually take you to the west entrance of the Jinshanling Section of the Great Wall. This means you can normally hike both sections of the wall in one day, although be advised that you will need to pay for a separate entry ticket to the Jinshanling Section.
If you're feeling peckish or dehydrated, there's usually a woman selling drinks and ice cream at the west entrance. If you can't find her, just walk a little further up the road and you'll find her shop, which sells ice-cold drinks, coffee, and some snacks.
Personally, we feel the best time to visit this section of the wall is either during spring, when the blossoms are in full bloom, or in autumn, so that you can admire the changing leaves. The weather during these seasons is particularly comfortable for hiking, whereas summer can be unbearably hot and winter can be too chilly.
