We purposely chose to visit at night and I think we made the right choice. Since it is so close to the main road and traffic, the darkness as the sun set and the place lit up added to the ambiance and the city background disappeared. The place was stunning at night but was crowded. It is a lovely temple.

Most of the temple is destroyed and defaced due to Hatshepusut's son. My favorite part of the temple was the walk up to the temple and the scenery around it. Solid temple but with so much defaced not as great as others.

This magnificent tomb is worth the extra ticket you need to purchase to enter. Nefertari was the principal wife of Ramesses II. Notice Nefertari's dark skin. She was a Nubian. The tomb is richly decorated and quite impressive.

I later found out from my tour guide that Nefertari's tomb closed for renovations the day after we visited. We were among the last tourists to be able to visit it.

Massive statues that are really cool to see. Basically, we stopped to take a photo and spent around 10 minutes there. That is all you really need, but the size of these are a marvel

Seeing the various parts of the temple flood light at night is impressive if you can ignore the rather overblown and dated sound track ( why do ancient Egyptians sound like posh English people from Downton Abbey? )

But if you have already been during the day I don't think it's really worth the effort. We only went as our schedule didn't permit a day visit.

As we were leaving we could hear the Arabic session starting and I wished we had done that one as you wouldn't have to try to get to grips with the rather hard to follow English soundtrack and could just enjoy the flood light temple.

I expect the Arabic one is cheaper too !

We were lucky enough to have hired a private guide and thoroughly recommend this. He was able to explain all about the obelisk and its partner one that is no longer in situ.

Worth a visit for sure. It was beautiful and unique compared to other temple's architecture. Well restored and some nice spots within the temple to see the details. The surrounding area also adds to this location's beauty.

My wife and I visited the Temple of Karnak site, which contains the Obelisk of Hatshepsut, during a tour of Egypt this past December. The first obelisk you encounter upon entering the site is the Obelisk of Thutmoses I on the right. The Obelisk of Hatshepsut is on the left a little farther into the site and it is the taller of the two. In fact, it is the tallest obelisk in Egypt and the second tallest in the world. The only one taller is in Rome. It amazed me to see these obelisks with such intricate carvings that are still intact in such good condition after all these centuries.

The Botanical Garden of Thutmosis III has a wonderful collection of flora and fauna the the Egyptian army under Thutmose III encountered on his campaigns in Syria and Palestine. Thutmose campaigned for most of his life to expand the influence of Egypt and is remembered as Ancient Egypt's Napoleon. It doesn't take a great deal of time to view the 'botanical gardens' of Thutmose III however, it is worthwhile when you realize this maybe the first study of botany and zoology.
