The museum itself is enormous, housing an incredible collection of ancient artifacts. However, we made a big mistake by coming without a guide. Unfortunately, many exhibits lack descriptions, leaving us wandering through the halls without understanding the significance of what we were seeing.
I strongly advise against hiring guides on the spot, as the pricing can be unclear. It’s better to arrange a guide in advance to ensure a fair price and a more informative experience. The highlight of the visit was the section dedicated to Tutankhamun, where recording is strictly prohibited.
Another important detail – there was a small queue for tickets, and you can only purchase them with a card, no cash is accepted.

Yes you will be hassled by some sellers but there is so much to see from antique phones, to beautiful lights but if you step out of the main drag and go through the spice market be prepared to be amazed. The mosque is incredibly grand, with beautiful domes and towering minarets that dominate the skyline. Inside, the intricate details of the design, from the stunning chandeliers to the ornate decorations, are truly impressive. The view from the mosque, overlooking Cairo, is breathtaking and adds to the overall experience.
When visiting, remember that you will need to remove your shoes before entering. There are people offering plastic coverings for your feet and asking for money, but you don’t need to pay for them - you can walk inside freely in your socks. This small area is clean, beautifully (and preciously) maintained, with a number of religious landmarks to learn about.
Plus the history of Cairo - and humankind - comes to life as you stroll the quiet, historic pavement. You're most likely to visit as part of a "Cairo day tour", but you could do this with a guidebook/internet on your own.

Please be aware that it’s very difficult to get an Uber out of this place, the connectivity on the app is very bad. - Vincent C583 contributionsIt is big and nice but seems a bit older and stores are not as interesting compared to the Festival Mall. Restaurants also did not seem as appealing. But worth a visit if you have another day to roam around. We went after a tour day before dinner so it was worth visiting. It’s a peaceful escape with a stunning lake, two restaurants, and platforms for kids to enjoy. The park offers breathtaking views of the Citadel, along with fountains, palm trees, and expansive lawns perfect for a relaxing picnic. Sunsets are gorgeous here.
I always love spending time here. The atmosphere is calm and refreshing, making it an ideal spot to unwind. However, I recommend visiting on weekday mornings to avoid the crowds—especially if you prefer a quieter experience. It tends to get very crowded, and if you're a foreigner, expect to attract a lot of attention.

In the evening this is a great place to go and eat good food in clean restaurants and takeaways. - Susan CMelbourne, Australia1,535 contributionsOur tour guide arranged for us to take a golf cart with driver from Al Azhar Park on a tour that is connected to the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. This provides you with access to the Prince Alin Aq Palace, Amir Altinbugha Al-Maridani Mosque, Umm Al-Sultan Shaaban Mosque and Madrasa, Amir Alaa Al-Din Kojk, Amir Aq Sunqr Mosque (Cairo Blue Mosque), the Amir "Khayr-Bek" Madrasa, Mausoleum, Sabil & Kuttab and Tarabay Al Sharifi Complex. Many of these sites are still under repair and some are only partially accessible. The blue tiles of the Amir Aq Sunqr Mosque were probably the most memorable though the Khayr-Bek complex was the largest and the domes and stained glass windows were excellent. We learnt a lot about mosque design: how the niche points to Mecca, the minbar provides a raised platform for speeches and sermons and there is usually a secondary structure towards the entrance to relay those speeches. We found it interesting and an excellent introduction to Islamic religious architecture.
Despite the number of mosques we visited this wasn't as long a tour as we had expected. This tour does not run Fridays, Saturdays or on holidays. We separately visited other Islamic Cairo sights such as Khan Al Khalili, Cairo Citadel and Mosque of Muhammad Ali (Alabaster Mosque) and were able to wander by ourselves around the streets, walls and gates of the Old Cairo which are not as pedestrian friendly as the restricted car access zone would suggest.Written 24 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
