We were directed to this market by our guidebook, which marks it as one of the sights not to be missed in Jerusalem.
Knowing that the market gradually turns into a huge food court in the evening, we deliberately arrived here at the end of the afternoon to observe the metamorphosis.
We perceived the market as colorful and lively, but after all no more so than many others in the Near East.
What really amazed us is the liveliness of the scene at dinner time: a very pleasant place of attraction has been created, due to the enormous influx of people and the variety and richness of the refreshment places.
Of course, we haven't neglected to dine here, in a small but cozy restaurant of Israeli cuisine.
We understood that the origin of this beautiful market as a structured place dates back to the time of the British mandate, between the two world wars.
The presence of the Jerusalem light rail (tramway) greatly facilitated our arrival in the neighborhood, and then our departure to the hotel.

  • PROS
    * Adjacent to world famous Jaffa gate entrance to Old City of Jerusalem
    * Next to the ancient Old City Wall from more than 500 years ago
    • Walking path to Jaffa Gate of Old City
    • Outdoor famous and exclusive upscale outdoor shopping mall
    • Very modern and busy and brightly lit and shiny and shimmering
    • Mingle with locals who are shopping and dining too
    • See how local people eat and shop and work together
    • See how the upper class locals shop
    • Sometimes there are street musicians and entertainers
    • Very large number of truly high quality restaurants, all of them with kosher supervision, and some with the "elegant" variety
    • Upscale exclusive (chain) retail stores
    * Historic area where the founder of the state first resided
    • Two large underground parking garages

    CONS
    • It’s a shopping mall
    • Some tourist interest or experience but more for relaxation, shopping and dining

    "I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... while going to and returning from the annual pre-dawn Grand Hosanna ritual of pounding the willow branches at the Western Wall (see my "helpful" photos of the pre-dawn temporary stall on the walkway of the mall for selling the willow branches).

The second, time, we had a business meeting.

Both times, I wandered around, made observations for this tripadvisor note and took (hopefully "helpful" photos).

    ADVICES
This place has the largest density of quality restaurants in the city- take advantage of that and have a meal while you are there.

I can recommend Cafe Rimon (milky), Cafe Greg (milky), Roladin (milky) and Aroma (milky)- you can see my "helpful" recent reviews of the first two.

I also have posted for you a very recent review of Kedma, which is meaty and outstanding.

As far as "stuff" in the stores- eh, that's expensive.

Please be sure to take note of where you parked (there is also the municipal Karta garage under there- take a photo of the identifying pillar (see my "helpful" photos from previous visits) and take note of where you came out on the pedestrian mall of the shopping area- when trying to leave by car, you will thank me.

Fun experience to have in Jerusalem with a group. We dressed up as biblical characters and then walked through part of the old city to a special spot for a photoshoot.

Most tourists to Jerusalem focus on the Christian quarter or the Jewish quarter, depending on their religious perspective. But it's definitely worth spending some time in the Armenian quarter.

Have lunch at the Armenian Tavern or another traditional Armenian restaurant and then go to one of the Armenian ceramic studios. There are four in the Old City. Vic's is located between the Armenian Tavern restaurant and the Jaffa Gate.

I got to meet Vic, see him paint a few pieces, and talk to him about his creative process. His small shop is crowded with his creations, ranging from very modern art to traditional paintings on traditional ceramics. (Some of the other studios only do traditional work.) It was neat to hear about his life in the Armenian Quarter, see him work, and take him a beautiful souvenir of this corner of old Jerusalem.

And in case you were wondering, he can do Christian pieces or Judaica. He can also personalize pieces in a variety of languages.

I had looked at Baltinester's website before I arrived in Jerusalem and had found some lovely Filigree Turquoise Hamsa 14k Gold earrings that I wanted to take a closer look at. When I saw them I could see that they were too small and would not really present themselves. Very quickly the owner suggested that we took two pendants that were bigger and made them into earrings. An excellent idea, and I walked away with a beautiful souvenir that will always remind me of my trip to Jerusalem.
    Don't hesitate to shop here!

Don't buy anything here. You will not be able to avoid the souk on your trip to Jerusalem. There are interesting things for sale but you will be expected to bargain. You will be constantly hassled but best to avoid replying in a polite way. I noticed some antiquity shops with "certificates" of authenticity for the items. You would be brave to purchase here. However the souk is to beestenjoyed with the colours and smells.

This is a hidden gem within the old city of Jerusalem! It features authentic and local artists which are amazing. The owners are also very friendly and don't hesitate to share more about the works, the artists behind it and making you feel welcomed. It is a very special place to buy something beautiful to remind you of the city and the people while also supporting local artists.

My wife and I have visited Israel many times. We always stay in Tel Aviv, but travel to Jerusalem by bus for a day. This artists co-op is a short cab ride from the bus station and a nice walk to the old city. Everything in the store is hand made from artists in Israel. The prices are more than fair and the customer service is incredible. We have purchased both in person and on line and have always been 100% satisfied. I can't recommend this shop enough.

In the center of Jerusalem it is possible to find a quiet place with a great museum and a restaurant.
It was the home of Anna Ticho and her husband a known eye doctor.
It was good that the place was kept and not converted in the high rising buildings as many in the area.
Even the garden was saved and the gallery as part of the Israel Museum has a permanent exhibition and also temporary exhibits of Israel artist.
The resturant was located in a upper floor, mainly of italian food.
It is also a coffee place to enjoy at all time.
It is possible also to have small group celebrations in a separate room.
The elevator to get to the third floor is small and not always work what is a problem for elderly people. It should be consider to fix it.

I had a wonderful experience shopping for antiquities at Zak’s Jerusalem Gifts. Zak is warm, professional, and kind. He is very knowledgeable about biblical antiquities and has some exquisite pieces. He is quick to point out if a piece has been reconstructed when not readily apparent. He has reasonable and fair prices. Buying from him is a "no pressure" experience.

My wife and I are on our first pilgrimage to the Holy Land and during our visit we tried our best to find quality gifts for our family back home and a few keep sakes for ourselves to remember these sacred days. Needless to say, this proved more difficult than expected. While walking the streets of the old city provides a stimulating and exciting experience, the quality of the goods found in many of the stores is lackluster. On one of our last evenings in Jerusalem we nearly gave up the pursuit of finding quality gifts (having refused to buy cheap “made in china” products from many other shops). BUT THEN WE FOUND GEORGE! Everything about George’s store, from the actual items he sells to the manner in which is displays them is 2-3 steps above any other store we visited. His products are high quality and individually priced. Do not expect to haggle him on the price. He has already fairly priced his items and will likely not come down. But this is for a good reason— his products are high quality!

I cannot recommend Georges shop more! If you want Olive Wood figurines, Nativity Sets, Advent Candle Sets, Jewelery, Roman Glass, Shofar (kosher), and other trinkets, don’t waste your time at other stores. The Christian quarter is quiet an easy to navigate. Start and end your search with George!

The owner and his son are very friendly and trustworthy. They run two “no haggle” shops with tons of interesting souvenirs at VERY fair prices. Enjoyed getting to know them and give them business.

Many of the shops I went into seemed sketchy and as someone who doesn’t have to haggle regularly, I would always have a certain amount of mistrust towards other shop owners. That was not the case at this shop. The owners are very easy to talk to and not pushing you for a sale. They are just helpful, easygoing people. Prices at their shop are very reasonable. You will feel very comfortable around them.

Would go back again and will recommend them to others.
