- Bhashana Jayakody8 contributionsGangaramaya Temple, though not ancient, is an iconic modern temple in Colombo. Most of its funding comes from local residents and Sri Lankan donors worldwide. The Bodhi tree base was constructed with support from the 6th King of Bhutan, showcasing its international ties.
The temple is popular among Colombo’s higher-income communities and is known for its museum-like interior, featuring historical artifacts, including Sri Lanka’s first Rolls-Royce car.
Visitors should note there is an entrance fee of 500 LKR for foreigners.Written 24 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. People were walking, exercising and sunbathing as well. Our hotel, Berjaya was right beside the beach and we had an over-bridge to reach the beach from our hotel (there was a train track under the bridge). There were a few restaurants that were literally on the beach itself.
It's a fairly long beach. There were some watersports activities happening. I remember jet skiing. Although, we didn't do any.Written 31 January 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LolaGo1Washington DC, DC6,618 contributionsLocated near the Lotus Tower, we visited this Hindu Temple next. Like any Hidu temples, we were asked to take off our shoes as soon as we entered the compound. I thought we would only take off our shoes when we enter inside the temples.
We hurriedly took some pictures here and left. The ground is rough and hot for us to take off our shoes outside of the temples.Written 7 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. But I felt that all are formal rather than live and buzzing happy go lucky atmosphere is missing.Written 3 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Connector43684459068Bengaluru, India50 contributionsIndependence Square is a historical landmark located right in the heart of Cinnamon Gardens in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is one of the popular places of heritage in Colombo and among the prime places to visit during your Sri Lanka Trip. It takes its name from the Independence Memorial Hall built there to commemorate the independence of Sri Lanka from British rule in 1948.
The column and pillars are decorated with traditional Sri Lankan designs and statues of lions are placed around the building. In front of the memorial hall is a statue of the founding Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Don Stephen Senanayake.Written 3 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LolaGo1Washington DC, DC6,618 contributionsHaving visited several religous sites during the TukTuk Tour and alreay feeling hot and tired,
I was turned off when sevral staff approached us as we got off our tuktuk. They insisted that we take off our shoes as we walked towards the temples. The ground was hot and I did not feel like walking barefoot all the way to the entrance of the temples and their interiors.
I briefly took pictures of the exteriors of the temples, the gate, etc. and left in a hurry. Perhaps, I’ll visit it again in the early morning and set my mind about walking barefoot. May be NOT.Written 7 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Wandered around here for ages. In one room there was such a lot of stuff that it looked like a junk room. Collection of so many things, watches etc etc? Glad I came though as very colourful and lots to see inside and outside.Written 29 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Hiruni A2 contributionsWe used the Sri Lanka Personal Tour Driver service for 8 days in January of 2025. This was a family trip for the 6 of us and we were immediately impressed by he communication by the company managers, Ishan and Celine, who answered our questions in a prompt manner and assured us that they would provide a van that would fit us comfortably.
Our driver, Nishan, met us in Colombo. It was clear when we met that he had studied the trip plan thoroughly and then for the rest of trip, he continued to impress up by his kindness, professionalism, and incredible ability to navigate the often difficult driving conditions in Sri Lanka. From the chaotic traffic patterns in Colombo to the hilly inclines in Ella, we felt incredibly safe with Nishan. He spoke excellent English and often provided interesting information on the places we visited as well. He always somehow knew exactly where and when to meet us after an excursion was complete. He anticipated our needs over and over again and by the end of the 8 days, we were sad to say goodbye to him. Nishan receives our highest recommendation as does the company - we would book through them again!Written 20 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
