- BelleBucheon, South Korea607 contributionsPrior to visiting COPE, i never knew about UXO (unexploded ordnance) and that after all these years after the Vietnam War, Lao is still suffering from the dangers of it. We watched a short film about UXOs and the work done by COPE in Laos (searching for UXOs, providing help/prosthetics to people who lost their limbs etc).
It's a small museum so it wont take much of your time but it was worthwhile for us. I have their website saved on my phone so I can learn more about this. It's free to enter as well exept for a small fee for parking if you're on a motorcycle or bicycle. You can donate or puchase from the store to help.Written 3 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The most fun was going in the mouth of one of the structures and going to three levels, hell, earth and heaven. The view from the top is great. We got an audio guide which explained what the story was for most statues. That made a big difference. Otherwise unless you knew the Hindu and Buddhist stories you would just walk through fairly quicklyWritten 16 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,818 contributionsPha That Luang is an important national symbol of Laos. The structure has been built, damaged, destroyed, rebuilt, damaged, rebuilt many, many times; thus the current structure (some 45 meters in height) is actually not old. The stupa gleams a golden color, with the top pinnacle coated with gold leaf; the rest is covered with gold paint. The stupa is situated a fair distance from the commercial center of Vientiane, requiring a taxi or tuk-tuk ride or a long walk. Visitors can enter the compound for a fee of 30,000 kip and walk around the stupa. There are also artifacts and replicas of ancient statues on display. At an adjoining temple, there are beautiful mural paintings depicting facets of the life and enlightenment of Lord Buddha. Also a nearby large reclining Buddha.Written 5 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,818 contributionsThe Patuxai Monument is striking and stands out starkly in the middle of the main avenue in Vientiane. It was built in the 1950s and 60s to commenerate Lao soldiers who had died in WWII and fighting for independence against the French. The history of the monument's construction is most interesting; it was built with money and materials donated by the United States intended for a new airport. As a result, some people derisively call the monument, the "vertical runway." Reportedly, the monument has recently been renovated (apparently funded by China), but the main difference I can see is a change in the landscaping. For some inexplicable reason, they removed the palm trees that used to beautifully surround and frame the monument and replaced them with a few low shrubs and flowers. Not an improvement in my opinion (compare older photos with those taken recently and form your own opinion).Written 5 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DotsGirl2Vancouver, Canada448 contributionsThis is a beautiful area with the Wat and other buildings. This is the Wat you go to for advice about our phases and life. If your wish is granted you are supposed to donate to the temple. We saw someone donate 100 eggs.Written 17 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,818 contributionsVat that Khao is situated adjacent to Pha That Luang, so the two can easily be combined in one visit. Inside the temple grounds is a large reclining Buddha. Also, don't see the impressive mural paintings depicting the life of Buddha inside one of the nearby buildings. Reportedly, the paintings are relatively new and were painted by monks (impressive talent).Written 5 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ana-Maria BCluj-Napoca, Romania1,251 contributionsIt is a smaller place than other similar sites, but it is very informative, well organized and with plenty of detail about what is happening in the entire world when it comes to UXO. Friendly staff. Do buy some souvenirs to support the great work they do!Written 17 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - IndySigIndianapolis, IN3,842 contributionsWe had a nice tour of their silk textiles shop and museum. The ladies making silk and cotton items were so interesting and their museum is full of fascinating material, clothing, jewelry and historical items relevant to the silk trade. Their indigo dying area is also very interesting.
The shop has lots of beautiful items and be sure you go home with the indigo blossom tea. Be warned, the silk prices are in USD and other items are in Kip. Not sure why USD when we are in Laos.Written 6 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The museum had some ornate designs for the exterior. And the grounds of the museum were generally well maintained. Pictures aren’t allowed in the interior for preservation purposes, but it was intriguing to see nonetheless.Written 5 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ana-Maria BCluj-Napoca, Romania1,251 contributionsIt's a beautiful place, but as it's surrounded by many, many parked cars, it's a bit hard to get a good photo. Worth checking out if it gets in your way.Written 17 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
