Must read two books while traveling in Azerbijan — Ali and Nino and the Orientalist.

An interesting side trip is Krasnoya Sloboda, the once largest all Jewish city outside of Israel. Peppered among the decrepit homes are massive mansions built by oligarchs with roots in Azerbijan.

The tower is a prime example of early pre-islamic Zoroastrian archicture. The early Zoroastrians worshipped the four elements of earth, fire, air and water. Worth the visit.

It is an interesting place with a lot more to see than I expected. Around the temple itself are several smaller rooms with displays explaining Zoroastrianism and other religious aspects of this place and its history. Souvenir shopping mall just outside.

The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is a cultural, artistic, and historical treasure trove. Located along the scenic Baku Boulevard, the museum is an architectural masterpiece designed to resemble a rolled-up carpet. From the moment you step inside, you’re immersed in the rich heritage of Azerbaijan’s carpet-weaving tradition.

The exhibits are beautifully curated, showcasing various carpets from different regions and periods. Each piece tells a story, with intricate patterns and vibrant colors reflecting the country’s culture, mythology, and craftsmanship. The detailed descriptions of each exhibit add depth to the experience, making it both educational and inspiring.

The museum isn’t just about carpets—it also includes displays of traditional clothing, textiles, and tools used in carpet weaving. There’s even a live demonstration area where artisans showcase the process of weaving, offering a glimpse into the incredible skill involved.

The museum’s layout is spacious and modern, with interactive elements that engage visitors of all ages. The views of the Caspian Sea from the upper floors are a bonus.

Baku fortress was built to defend the city rich in development by foreign invaders. It was built on a high hill, in the form of an amphitheater. Some parts of the fortress still remains.

If you want to get to better and close up view of the Flame Towers or the best aerial view of the Baku downtown, then herr is the place to visit. Besides this you also have a lush green Park and a view of the Baku TV antenna. It offers excellent night shots of the city also. This is where you will find many tourists and and locals alike. It is definitely a must visit when I'm Baku.
